anyone loaded the hornady 95 gr varmint in 6.5x55

I am looking at loading hornady 95 gr vamint bullets in 6.5 x55. anyone already done it? I am looking for anyone experience with this bullet. Thanks in advance for your help.

I've worked up to 50.4gn of Reloder 17 with no pressure signs.

Best load so far is 49.6gn of Reloder 17 but I'm still working with it. I haven't checked the velocity yet.

This is in a Tikka 695 and these loads were fine in mine. It might not be the case in your rifle.

I use 95gr. V-Max bullets with 50grs. of H4350 at 3200fps. C.O.L. 2.850"
51grs. went 3275fps but were a bit sticky with Lapua cases.

Average velocity - 3251fps

I worked up to 52.0gn of RL 17 today but didn't get a velocity for that load.

Got some decent groups and was just barely starting to feel a bit of resistance on the bolt lift at 52.0gn.

Tried some 100gn Nosler Ballistic Tips today as well with 49.6 and 50.0gn of RL 17. Both were under 1" at 100yds.

These may end up outshooting the Hornadys.

It's surprising to me that the BC listed for the 100gn BT is lower than that listed for the 95gn V-Max. Both are boat tails and the Nos is 5gn heavier and therefore longer.

.350 vs. .365 if I recall correctly.

I wonder if the the 'real' B.C.s are much closer or even reversed...

I got out yesterday for some more testing.

I discovered that the 100gn BT and the 95gn V-Max seem to like and dislike the same powder charges.

They shoot to pretty much the same point of aim as well.

52.8gn of RL-17 produced nice groups with each bullet and will likely be the load I'll use for these bullets. I may tweak it by a couple of tenth's to see if I can do a bit better but this is pretty much it.

.433" with the Nosler BT
.663" with the Hornady V-Max.

The BT has been consistantly better than the V-Max right across the board.

I went as high as 53.2gn of RL-17 with the 95gn V-Max and could see slight ejector marks on the case head. So I think 52.8 is close enough to max anyway.

I'll have to watch this load in warmer temperatures as well. Temperature for this range session was -7C.

I didn't chronograph these loads but suspect that the 52.8 load is North of 3300fps for both bullets.

I'll report the velocity of this load next time I get out.


Shot at 100 yards with a Tikka 695 w Leupold 4.5-14x40:

I guess I should add that these groups were shot 'Round Robin' style to minimize the effects of fouling buildup and brief wind conditions.

My go to load in Rem 700 Classic for this bullet.
