New norico broke toggle lock

There is not much in the way of casual parts interchangeability in 1911s generally, that's for sure.

I love the 1911, but you definitely have to be prepared for what you're getting in to if you want it to do things like feed different bullet profiles reliably, have a glass rod trigger, shoot with extreme accuracy, go 2000 rounds between stoppages while getting dirty and stomped on, and last 25,000 rounds between rebuilds.

It's a beautiful pistol, but like an antique car, it's going to demand a lot from the user if their performance expectations are high.

Right. If I wanted to pull wrench all day I'd buy a 1911, a Harley Davidson and a boat...

Yeah, those are reasonable comparisons in my opinion.

I don't go for HD bikes...but I do have a stripped down suzuki streetfighter, a 1964 Malibu, and 1911s.

I do believe you can get an out-of-the-box combat-dependable 1911. But the price, relative to an average entry level 1911, is probably similar to the cost of buying an out-of-the-box commute-dependable Model T compared to buying an old project beater. I would guess someone could build you a Model T out of CNC'd parts etc, but man, it would be pricey.

Someone can sure build you a modern 1911 out of CNC'd tool steel...but man, it's pricey. And you have to care enough to spend that money.

I don't blame people who love 1911s that much. I love them about half as much as I need to to go buy a Wilson.

I also don't blame people who really can't understand why people spend $3000 getting an 8 shot pistol with an intensive maintenance schedule.

IMO it's not something you do because it's practical. It's a pretty emotional decision, and if you're okay with that, rock on. But yeah...the people who pretend it's a rational decision are probably not being very realistic.

I fully agree. I love 1911's as well. I just can't justify the constant tinkering and the price tag of a running specimen for an impractical range toy.

As much as I love the 1911, it's pretty much accepted now that the cost of a reliable 1911 for defensive purposes is between $4 and $5,000 US, per gun. The FBI issues the Springer Pro for a reason, that's what it takes. I hear they're now issuing 2 of them per qualified agent, 1 rail and 1 non-rail. Even Larry Vickers (who is certainly more than capable of building his own rock solid, reliable 1911) uses a $4500 Wilson. As good as 1911's are, they're the product of another age, they require hand work to function well and maintenance to keep them functioning. As noted, it's an emotional decision, not a practical one.

That's interesting, I did not know that and I would not have guessed it correctly.

Shocking I know. I do enjoy 1911's, I just don't enjoy having to tinker with them to make them work, pay a small fortune for one that does, or the negative aspects of their operation when viewed as a service/duty gun. I'm about practical, and the 1911 just isn't. Still a very cool gun...
