Bore Sighter?

I use a Bushnell optical type and find it can be very useful when diagnosing scope issues. The visible grid pattern makes uneven movement/failure to adjust very easy to see.

If I were starting off now I'd probably go with the laser types but some years ago before those got common I got a used Tasco ShotSaver cheaply and it works too well to justify replacing it.

The Bushnell magnetic boresighter is fairly affordable, and it kills two birds with one stone. It not only allows you to boresight your rifle (which you can do without a boresighter, using a bolt rifle), but it also allows you to confirm your zero and check the tracking and RTZ of your scopes, due to the visual grid that it uses.

Leupold Zero Point. Not the cheapest but will get you onto a 8 1/2 x 11 at 100 yds first shot, ergo it saves ammo which is pretty much the point. Very small and simple to use.

Im here!

Dont bother with a bore sighter. 99% of hunters are better off learning the process and practicing shooting.

You may use more ammo, but when you need to take that shot at an animal, your chances of solidly connecting are much better.

Last gun I mounted a scope on I had it sighted in within 5 shots.

I can't see where shots not hitting the target would be of any more benefit than dryfiring my rifle.

I shoot lots and just change scopes frequently on guns I am quite familar with, so don't see the benefit. Also I mount scopes for others and then sight in their firearm for them, so no benefit in this scenario either. Oh, and yes I do recommend to them to shoot it themselves before going hunting!

just go buy a extra box of shells and shot them. i never had a scope mounted that i couldn't hit paper at 25 yards with OR see where i missed to. i think bore sighting is a money scheme that gun shops run just to pocket a extra 25 bucks for nothing.

and SHORTACTION to you i say, i never had a dryfired recoil so thats how it benifits in case you missed that

They are not for me, useless except if you can't see down the bore from the breach, as on some semi's and lever/pumps. I set up at the bench, look through the barrel and centre the target, move eye to the scope and adjust crosshairs onto same target, done, boresighted! Just as accurate as using a peep sight, very similar!

I used to do this... it worked.... then I went to cabelas and bought the little "laser cartridge" set that shoots a laser out of the barrel.... same principle but you can look through the scope and see where your berrel is pointed... and just adjust x-hairs to meet the projected dot.... the binus is you can do this at moa... 100 yards... just make sthings easier for a less than 100 dollar investment IMOP......

There is always this weird comprehension disconnect where someone asks about boresighters and someone says "I use a big piece of cardboard".
Do people with boresighters interrupt the "big piece of cardboard" threads?
We are actually up to speed on looking down the barrel :).

I have to admit the recoil thing never occurred to me, but now that you have mentioned it, I guess I will have to add that into my shooting routine. Two or three, five shot groups into the backstop before I bother putting the target up! Ohhh, wait, I don't think I will, cause I don't want too!!! You will never convince me that shooting rounds in a backstop will give me more benefit than sighting carefully and squeezing the trigger on a dryfire, no recoil to cover your mistakes, everything shows up through the scope. Just take someone that is having trouble shooting decent groups and load the firearm for him/her, sometimes put a live round in and sometimes no round, you can't tell anything from the fired live round because the recoil masks any mistakes, but they will be very evident with the dryfire.

Just looking for some advice and experiences on boresighters, not whether I should buy one or not.

This is as bad as going to a play a round of golf, everyone has answers for the questions you aren't asking.

Have you every used a boresighter? If so what brand was it and how did it perform?

I have the cheaper style of bushnell and it is adequate, also use one of the $35 laser type and it`s likely the most cost effective. Like Ben i still preferre to look down the bore where possible. Sksavenger needs to get one, rifle he brought down and said it was sighted in, i think he was driving by the target at high speed and let one fly out the window of the truck.:p

I don't disagree with Ben that often, but I will here. Like most shooting equipment, a bore-sighter's accuracy and repeatability is limited by the attention to detail of its user. I use the old Bushnell system with the bore arbors that hold the instrument in place. The key is how carefully you ensure the instrument attaches to the arbor the same way each time you use it. I've found that the instrument is not only useful for bore-sighting, it is also useful in seeing if the scope adjustment values are correct, or if the scope has a problem. If you record where the reticle lies on the grid, it can be used to bring the scope back into line should it be removed from the rifle, or if it takes a bump in the field. Any scope adjustment must be confirmed by shooting, but these things sure beat guessing.

I have one of those magnetic bore sighters (Bushnell I believe). Works OK, although I think I can do it just as fast through trial & error. Actually don't use it anymore.

I have one of those laser pointers for my guns. Cabelas sells them. I haven't used it to sight in my guns because they were shooting where I wanted them before I got it.

On one deer hunt, I got all excited over a mulie buck and missed. We couldn't believe I missed that easy close shot. Obviously it was the gun, right?

Back at camp I put the laser pointer in and checked my gun. Lo and behold it was me, getting buck fever.

Upon reflexion, I realized that I get that way with deer. Luckily with moose, it's all business.:bangHead:

I have had and used a Bushnell "Standard Bore Sighter" #74-4001 for many years. Comes in a nice vinyl folding carrying case with 15 different steel Arbors from .177 to .50. I see the original price tag is still on the box: sale priced $99.99 at Farmers Supply in Winnipeg (taken over by WSS years back). I didn't realize I had paid that much for it.

Works for me though.:) I might try one of those laser cartridges one of these days .
