I just acquired a S&W 686, probably an older version and I suspect the front orange insert will be hard to see at the range I go to. Does anyone make a black insert for these?. I know I could use paint or fingernail polish but I would like to try something less permanent. TC

If there is no pin it is really hard to remove the plastic insert without runing it. The newer models have a pinned sight and they can be changed fairly easy.
My advise to you is paint in flat black with model paint. If it starts to come off just retouch it up or if you get tired of it get some paint thiner and take it off or change to a different colour. You can also buy sight paint as well. Some people use nail polish it all works.
Just my two cents worth. I have lots of different guns with the different front sights. On certian days you can see one better then the others and the next day with different light conditions it changes again.

Brownell's has a front sight insert kit. It's not cheap at $61. It does have all the colours but......

You may want to give it a fair shake before you replace or paint it. The insert sort of glows in sunlight or even bright ambient shade much like a fiber front sight does on a semi auto. The idea is that it becomes brighter than the surroundings so it's easier to see.
I do not beleive this is what you want. This kit is a do it yourself make your own insert from a liquid that hardens. I am quite sure this would detract from any but the cheapest of guns. It is not something that I would ever want to do to a really mice S&W revolver.

take a piece of masking tape and twist it tight, light one end of the masking tape,
black soot will start to rise, place your gun so the soot covers the front sight.
this makes a flat black coating and will wipe off when your done shooting

Might suggest before you do any permanent damage to the red insert/front sight - put some black tape over the insert and try shooting it that way to assure you really don't want that red sight before you resort to drastic measures you may regret after its too late!!!!
