ISSC MK22 Socket Head Cap Screws

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all, this is in response to the socket head cap screw fix by weneary3.

First of all, thank you for a very informative explanation & guide to address the screw loose issue experienced by many others in various online discussions.

Back in December 2011, in anticipation of the arrival of my new MK22 around Christmas, I took the advice of weneary3 and acquired some stainless steel 6-32 x 3/4 and 6-32 x 1/2 socket head cap screws. I wanted to replace the factory screws as a "preventive maintenance" before using the rifle. BTW, my local Home Depot and another big box hardware store did not carry this type of screws. My local RC model hobby store and two industrial supply stores (Fastenal & Brafasco) do have these screws. However, Fastenal only sell them in packs of 50. I got free screws from Brafasco as I was purchasing the blue Loctite from them.

When my rifle finally arrived, I proceeded to do the swap as well as Loctite all the other screws. To my surprise when I removed the factory vertical & horizontal cap screws: they are not the same size as the 6-32! Now, the 6-32's will screw into the factory screw holes but the fit was very sloppy. Visual inspection shows the 6-32 looks skinnier than the factory screws. So a thorough investigation was in order.

Being a rifle from Europe intended for an international market not exclusive to the U.S.A., I thought it was a bit odd that the fasteners (screws) would be in imperial sizes (e.g. 6-32). A quick check of the hex (Allen) key confirms my suspicion: the factory screws use a 3mm hex key. This translates to a M4x0.7 metric size cap screw. Measurement of the major diameter of the thread confirms the M4x0.7 metric size.

I proceeded to replace both the vertical & horizontal screws as well as the stock plate cap screw (the one that fasten the stock plate to #39). I found the factory stock plate cap screw too short. The screw hole in #39 was tapped much deeper than the factory screw was using.

So here's the revised screw replacement info for non-stripped threads:

Vertical screw: stainless steel socket head cap screw M4x0.7x18mm
Horizontal screw: stainless steel socket head cap screw M4x0.7x16mm*
Butt Stock Plate screw: black oxide or stainless steel socket head cap screw M4x0.7x12mm

*I am using a longer screw than factory. The factory horizontal screw sits flushed with the far side of the nut when tightened. A longer screw with 15mm or 16mm length will protrude a few millimeters beyond the nut - a much better fit mechanically. And there is room for these longer screws.

Hope this help.
Cheers... happy plinking!

Well, I have recieved my rifle back from service(OCTOBER). It took almost 13 days for shipping to the retailer which is only 90 minutes away. All they(Distributor) did was tighten screws and did something to the firing pin. After the normal failure to fire/eject/feed, I experienced an out of battery discharge. How do I know this......louder than normal bang, bright flash and mostly by the burnt powder that hit my forehead.

This has been an enlightening experience.

Sounds like this gun may only be good for target practice...

...as a target.

Just a final conclusion to my experience. This firearm is going to be de-registered and I will be getting my money back which ISSC is authorizing.

Just got back from the range. First time for a new mk22. After reading this post I was a bit worried that I bought one. Before I went I tore it down and locating all the screws, and lubed the crap out of it. Started with 100 stingers only had one fte. Next 100 Federal game shock all went good. Then about 200 Blazer with no problems. So that made about 400 with only one fte. On the next few mag.'s I had one fte each, so I lubed what I could with out tacking it apart. Did not have a single problem after that. Shot a total of 725 rounds, with only 3 or 4 fte. All in all I think it was a good day.

glad to hear your problems are finally solved (aside from all the needless stress/frustration and all)

The issue is resolved but in order to receive the refund of purchase:

Retailer...........15 days from purchase
Distributor.......Option to repair/replace/refund
Manufacture.....Issues authority to refund
Distributor.......De-registers the firearm and issues credit to retailer
Retailer...........Option to credit/refund

I missed the 15 days(firearms worked at first). Distributor, In my case, tried to repair. Shipped back to retailer then me. Test fired....failed. Ship back to Distributor from the Retailer. Awaiting final outcome for credit/refund depending upon store policy.

This is how it works in Canada.;)

Sounds like these things require more oil to function, than my Studebaker!:)

Just went and shot the 2nd thousand rounds out of my nephews mini scar, works great, but found that when he was loading the gun, was short stroking the bolt wich causes propblems to fire and eject, but other wise still going strong with bulk Blaser, WIn WIldCat, old Federal junk, and just tryed out some WInchester 555 holow points, probably the best stuff down the tube so far! Sorry to here all the bad that others are experiancing! I haven't even cleaned the damb gun yet!OOPS! DAle Z!

Funny, sounds like some of these are great, and some are outright lemons. Got to wonder if the bad ones are Friday afternoon built (gotta hurry! Buddies are already at the bar!) or Monday morning built (oh man, I am so hung over. Is it 4:00 yet?). Seems to be a huge disparity in functioning from one gun to the next.

***Might be interesting to compare the serial numbers on the good ones vs. the bad ones, to see if there's a causal relationship. Maybe the low serial numbers were better/worse than the later ones? Or, maybe it''s just random, in which case it's just a crap shoot (no pun intended...:D)

Another day with the ISSC Mk22 at "Zombie land" tgt range on the family farm. Weather was -8 C with a light wind. Both my son and I put the remaining mixture of federal 40 grain and winchester ammo types. Had a few Failure to feed (boy loaded the 5 mags on the ride out) but no real problems that couldn't be cleared with some good old IA's and Stoppage drills. Found some loose screws on the rail cover and back plate assy.

Will keep you posted 600+ rds down range so far.

I ditched my mk22. lost a fair amount of coin but I added a couple years to my life, saved myself from pulling out more hair and got enough to afford a maurader kit for the 10/22!

This MK22 system sounds like a ###y girl friend, she looks gorgeous but treats you like crap. The Ruger 10/22 is a time proven gun that is like a great wife, not as ###y and new, but far more reliable and faithful, if treated with moderate care.

Me? I opted for an SR22, which is like a wife in a ###y black outfit, that is much tougher than she appears. I was also tempted by the MK22, but I couldn't afford to lose any more hair either.
