Hey guys,

I was doing some looking around for some load data for Hornaday XTP's, in 230gr, 45acp. Found a load, which was CCI LP primers, 6.4gr unique, bullet seated to 1.23". Now, I have worked up to this load, but it seems to be a VERY high power load, although no pressure signs what-so-ever, and accurate as snot.

Can someone tell me if this is an acceptable load, or am I getting too close to the cartridge specs?

Well Hornady doesn't provide a listing for the .45 ACP with that bullet. (http://www.hornady.com/support/downloads/load-data) They do say that the page is being expanded.

Looking at my Sierra manual, with a 230 gr jacketed bullet, it lists 6.8 gr of Unique as the absolute max load. I would say that you are probably OK, but every firearm reacts differently.
 
she may buck a bit, but that's the 230 grain bullet- remember, with a pistol you load for BULLET WEIGHT- manufacturer, and shape don't matter all that much as far as loads go- my speer lists out a max of 6.9 of unique- if you find it unpleasant, drop to 200 grains-that hits just about as hard but with less recoil and the same powder charge- if it ain't enough for you, i have a listing for a 260 that will snap your wrist
 
I just checked my Lyman 49th Edition for you. The closest listing I could find is for 230gr TMJ, Recommended start point for Unique is 5.9, with the max being 6.6 (825fps, 15,800 CUP). It looks like your load of 6.4 falls within spec. As t-star said, bullet weight has a lot to do with it. I like lead 200gr SWC for outdoor paper-punching. I'm still working up a 230gr jacketed load, but already find the 230gr "snappier".

I just checked my hornady reloading book and for the 230 xtp it says 6.6 is max at 900 fps. That being said I am running 50% over max and using a mag primer for a nice hunting round. And out of my cx4 storm it is a fast round. Sad part is it is too fast and the bullets don't hold together. That being said 6.4 is in the safe area. I find that most books are on the lawyer heavy side but I wouldn't suggest going as hot as I am.

Of note ken waters in his pet loads said that 800x Is the best powder for the 45acp. I also found that it burned cleaner. IMO any ways
