Ever just replay that miss in your head?

And reading threads like this are what cause insomnia, now I'll lay here re-thinking every missed shot, or missed opertunity
Eventually I'll remember something random about that season, smile and doze off
For every great miss, there will be an amazing shot, that everytime you tell the story it will be more heroic

I only think about one shot sometimes. I hit a small doe high and hit it in the spine. It did not die instantly and let out a very loud "waaaaa" that echoed through the woods. I thought it was kind of eerie.

baboon

I missed a huge black bear in 1998, and a baboon (!) in 2009. Both felt like perfect shots, no explanation or excuse for the misses.

I doubt that a full week ever goes by without my wondering about one of them...which always brings the other one to mind as well!

The baboon is ,or would be a great story. We have all missed one of those!

Sadly, not a great story...just an irritating memory. The second-to-last day of a 17-day safari, and up till that point I was on fire. I could do no wrong.

And then...a dog baboon at 150 yards or so, a solid rest, no wind, stationary target, all the time in the world, good light, no pressure...and the dang critter took off at Mach 4, totally unscathed. The PH was very diplomatic, suggesting that I had clipped a branch or something, but basically I just plain missed an easy shot. I simply CANNOT FORGET that baboon!

Not for lack of trying, either.

This year (2011) i was out on Thanksgiving bow hunting for my big 6x5 typical that id had patterned to a tee. At exactly 6:32 he came walking in to the oats, where another smaller buck (low 130's) was eating. Well he was NOT happy with that buck and never paid attention to me at all ( I was sitting in a chair, 15 yards from the pile on the ground). As soon as he looked away i drew, he looked at me, never knew i was there, but saw something. Looked away, i put my 20 yard pin 2 inches low on his vitals. Went to shoot....my release wouldn't work. Finally after holding draw for, what seemed for ages but was only 1 min, i got the release to work, he ducked it. I found my arrow, had a tuf of hair and that was it. Saw him again in rifle season, shot, he zigged when we zagged and missed. But, he made it through season, revenge is going to be sweet!!!

What is this......miss.....you speak of?

:pSeriously, everyone has or will miss at some point and they are not always explainable. Don't dwell on it, lest you start second-guessing yourself which could lead to more misses. On the bright side, I'd rather a clean miss than a bad wounding.

Take a few practice rounds to verify yourself and your equipment are up to the task and move on.
