Thinking of getting a new marlin for the ole man for moose hunting as he loves his levers, and was looking at the 338 MX, but since this round is seriously hard to find Im geared towards going with the 308 MX as its data seems sufficient for moose out to 150-200y and seems to be taking off with other ammo manufactures, even though we seldom shoot beyond 125y.

I have punched paper with a fellow range members 308 MX and liked it but am looking for any thoughts or experience on game, I have asked my fellow member but he has yet to shoot anything with his.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've seen the 338MX on the shelf in a small sports shop in BC and Bass Pro in Calgary had
6 or 8 boxes last time I was there so it's showing up. Performance wise it's a pretty
impressive round.

Hopefully they won't go the way of the 307 win and 356 win. If you do get one I would suggest getting into reloading also and round up some brass, just in case. A BLR or a Savage 99 in 308 would also be good option with easy to find ammo.

I did the same as Ben when I bought my 356, I think I have over 200 brass ready to use once I wear out the ones I have now that are loaded. I'm good for a LONG time.

If I was buying a lever action rifle for my dad, primarily intended for moose, without question it would be a BLR in 358 Winchester.
x2! ........ or at least a BLR .308Win.

If you really love your father, you pass on the the hard to find, expensive, obscure chambering.

Marlin 308 fan, I am!

I picked up a Marlin .308 express from the used rack at P and D this fall before hunting season. It is my go to rifle for all game. I like it so much, I'm looking for the laminated stainless version of it. You will be more than satisfied with this rifle and calibre.
Another plus, Hornady Leverevolution in 160 grain and 140 grain under $25/box!!

Sooooooo .... for the sake of discussion, what does the Marlin in this chambering offer that would be an improvement over a BLR81 in 308?

for the price, I'd take an older marlin336 in 30-30 and run leverevolution ammo. if you really need extra performance rechamber to ackley improved, and reload

I agree with the Benny guy, ugly butts are just butt ugly.
Three fifty eight I agree on.
Mirrors or no mirrors, great round.
And did anyone ketch the bold action 358win in the EE?
