Playing With Tavor Scopes

So I've been jumping back and forth with a few different scope setups, trying to make a decision regarding power.

So today I picked up a new Viper PST! 2.5-10 power with a 44mm lens. Not the front focal plane or anything too intense. But bright glass and a solid reticle.

But trying to take apart the ADM mount from my 1-4 PST has been a real pain. Take a look at the pictures. I'm using a single high ring (not to shoot with, just to look at) for the moment. Until I can get some new screws for the cantilever mount that is.

This is the usual setup I run.

And this is the up-close setup. Sparc cowitnesses nicely with the flip-up irons

how well does it hold zero using just a single mount like that. its only 223 but still its gotta move with such a large bell on it.

I'm also trying some different scopes on my tavor (have both the 2.5x10 and 1x4 PSTs). I'm running them on a Burris PEPR mount. So far I like the results with both but I'll probably put the 2.5x10 back on the M14. I think I'll try an ACOG next.

Does that 1-4x PST work well with the mount that comes with it? Is it a quick release mount? I'm really starting to like that one, seems very flexible.

Also what kind of groups are you getting with your Tavor? I want to use mine for gophers.

I tried a buddies acog and found the eye relief too short for me. I want to check out a leupold HAMR scope actually. simile reticle, but way more eye relief.

I think I'll end up buying another of the vortex/adm mounts. probably the 2 inch offset and setup a few options between.

I originally posted these pictures for Roddy, so I hope he sees them here.

I've got one of the new full rail Tavor versions, so I could probably mount the ACOG a little further back. That might help.

Thanks! I was thinking that the mount came with the 1-4x PST like the Vortex red dots but I was reading the manual and it says you need to buy one seperately. What is the one you are using? This thread might just cost me $600....

Regular Acog does blow for eye relief. I have the TA11 and the difference is night and day, eye relief is awesome! The TA33 is supposed to be really good as well but I've never tried one.

Yah, the TA33 does have decent eye relief, much nicer than the TA31, but the FOV is a fair bit narrower on the TA33 compared to the TA31.

The vortex canteliver mounts are made from them by American Defense, and retail for over $200. But in their 2012 catalog they also list an in house-made one for $159 or so. That might be a good option.

I've also heard good things about the Burris mount.

I currently have my RFB scope/mount setup on my Tavor. 3-9x Burris Fullfield II. Good scope for the price. The quick release mount is set up for the RFB. I'll be getting another one and putting a 1.5-5x Falcon in it. This will either stay on the Tavor or go to an AR. Not sure yet. I think the 1-5x range is best for the Tavor. It still allows you to use it's great off hand shooting ability.

So I've been jumping back and forth with a few different scope setups, trying to make a decision regarding power.

I bought a Bushnell Elite 6500 1.25-8x32 & put it on my Kel-Tec RFB using a ARMS 35QD mount & 35M rings. It allows VERY fast 'point & shoot' on low power & at 8 power, it's plenty to shoot further distances. I personally think this scope is great value for the $ with LeBaron selling them at $370 when they used to be $699.

And... Because I really liked it on my RFB, I sold my old Tavor with the Meprolite M21 & bought the new full railed Tavor so that I can put the same mount & scope on it. I'm looking forward to getting to the range with the new setup!

Cheers
Jay

I just run an eotech with a 3x magnifier, with an elcan specter dr on the rfb. Might get another elcan for the tavor. Way better than the eotech with magnifier.

I must insist no one copies the single scope ring mounting strategy. It's a recipe for disaster.

Pushing vortex's warranty to the limit . . . every single time.

Actually if you read the post, I just wanted to see where I'd place it for eye-relief. I'm waiting on a second American Defense mount before I even think about taking this to the range.

@Jay: The 6500 is a really good buy these days with Bushnell phasing them out. I had never seen a 1.5-8 though! Probably because I was only glancing at them over the counter at Wholesale Sports. I'd love to try the new leupold Mark 4 1-8 (new from 2011 I guess) but I just can't imagine that many thousands on a scope.

I did play with an Elcan DR 1.5-6 at Shot Show. I want one. I want one, on a .308 SCAR, so bad. But that's not going to happen, so I might have to settle with saving and putting one on an FNAR instead.

As a side note: I've finally determined that P-mags definitely do touch the bolt-hold open. My original video/post was inconclusive, but having looked at the new M30 p-mag its definitely made to fix that.

that's a sweet setup you've got Epoxy! Is that a LAR 10 rounder? I've always wondered how they'd sit in the magwell of a Tavor. I just have to get off my ass and buy some.

Thanks.

Yup it's a LAR 10 rounder. They work great. Drop free and function well.

I have to buy some more mags. I was looking at the Pmags for the 5/30 but I'm hesitant now with the reports that they damage the Tavor and ACR rifles.

There we go! Silly room-mate hid the torx driver.

But as far as the P-mags these days: I'd wait till someone starts bringing in the new M3 model, which is really what the E-mag should have been in the first place.
