Hi there, a friend of mine is just getting back into the shooting game and wants to get a couple bolt action .22s for him and his wife.

I have a few .22s but they are not my area of expertise. What do you guys think are a a few options for a good bolt action mag fed for competition and hunting.

He is looking to spend up to a grand each for them.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Cheers, McLean

Well, I'm not sure any hunting rifle would be a good competition/bench gun~they're built differently. However, if "competition" means between he and wife..:) I'd say if the $1000 each needs to include a 1/2 decent scope and rings, he ought to be looking at CZ bolt actions. I had a 452 in .17 HMR, beautiful rifle. I could always shoot Savages better though, but the fit/finish isn't as good as the CZs.. Savage's, in my experience (my CZ experience being limited) are more accurate in my hands by a long shot. Not sure how much of that is the Accutrigger, which I like allot. I will say this, you don't hear many people say CZs are more accurate than Savages, which are around 1/2 the price for the plastic-stocked versions. Would leave allot of spare cash for better optics/spare mags/ammo, etc.

I'm a Savage guy, but seeing a Savage and a CZ side-by-side...even I get mesmerized by how rich-looking the CZs are..

I'd recommend either savage or CZ. I have limited experience with CZ's although people who shoot them love them. I do have a savage mark II heavy barrel and it is easily as accurate as the most accurate guns I've ever owned. I think the CZ's are prettier though. But that also lends the question, if he's using them for hunting, does he want to carry something as pretty as a CZ through hunting territory?

I'd personally spend $400 on optics, and the rest on the rifle... Each. Which leaves room for either the CZ or savage.

I'd get a CZ452 in American (light barrel) if he intends to carry it and shoot off hand, and Varmint if he insists on heavy barrel (although it has no advantage) or does all his shooting off a rest or bipod.

Have a Remington 513S that I'm considering putting on the block. Falls in the scarce to rare category and would fill that niche for both target and sporting.

What kind of competition? Casual target shooting, bench-rest...

If I'd be looking for another "nice" 22lr rifle, I'd give serious thought to the new Browning T-Bolt

Or the CZ American

Both quality firearms, light and accurate... and should be within the $1,000 budget with rings/optic/spare magazines

what kind of competition?

Biathlon Izhmash 7-2 ok basic is under the budget. Toggel/bolt action mag fed.

I have a few CZ's and have had over 40 .22's over the years, these little rifles are a joy to shoot! The fit and finish is spot on and they are absolute tack drivers, although it does get a little boring shooting all your rounds into the same hole after a while:D

Thats when you start shooting in the wind haha

Another vote for one of the CZ models here. I have a CZ 452 Varmint that I am very pleased with.

Another vote for the CZ. With it's fit and finish it is a real pleasure to use.

I've owned a Savage MkII as well. Don't know if it was just that rifle, but I couldn't get the same accuracy out of it as the CZ. Now I just own the CZ. ;)

hi
browning buckmark rifle (simi auto) for the lady and a browning t-bolt t/v :eek:r: cz 452 varmint in 17 hmr....... if this is for hunting pests (gophers) splitting the targets, 17 gets the far ones.... 22lr gets the close ones. this also changers up the shooting if one goes alone.

luck
