If you or Chapters don't want a dog eared copy, get a subscription or put them in plastic like some other monthly magazines do. I have no doubt that reading the magazine at the store is on the cheap side. However, fewer people would store read them if they had real content and/or were cheaper.
As for the Public Library, they're ripping off the publishers more than anyone. There is no way they can accurately estimate the usage of a book and pay additionally for such numbers. I call BS on the increased costs to purchase. Even if they do/did, the increase is nowhere near equivalent to the number of users for a book. Aside from that, I can assure you the arrangement with a publisher does not include photocopying or reproducing the book in any way shape or form which is very commonly done at all Libraries. My other concern is the fact that my tax dollars go towards the Library whether I use it or not. That sounds like theft of my tax dollars without my consent. Then again, that's what government does on a daily basis anyway. A crime is a crime I guess, unless its committed by big gov. right?
What do you think is going to happen if and when most "books" are offered in digital format only? Personally I see too much potential for censorship by other entities but that's for another discussion. Do you think people will pay for a digital copy or "steal" hacked copies from friends or other online sites? Lets be realistic. A digital copy of a book isn't a tangible product, so why would someone pay for a non item? Those running a Kindle or similar device are already fans of cheaper and easier solutions. So what's cheaper and easier, buying their digital copy or getting a hacked/stolen/free copy? Honestly I don't see the issue with borrowing a digital copy from a friend as its no different than borrowing a paper book from a friend or the library now. I'm not overly versed on digital e-readers and the process of purchasing digital books. But I bet you can't transfer it from device to device. Who's stealing from who now?
if I worried about every minor law I broke in a day, I would achieve nothing. Everyone breaks the law everyday. Its a sad reality but one that cannot be avoided thanks to a plethora of ignorant and pointless laws. How many folks on this forum J walk? How many fail to signal at least once a day while driving? How many talk on the phone while driving, flick their cigarette ashes on the street, litter, keep found money, speed, fail to tie down a load, DRIVE WITH NO LIGHTS ON? Such "illegal" activities occur all the time. In my mind, those activities which put others lives at risk, are far more "criminal" than those that don't, and reading a magazine at the store is far from a dangerous crime.
