Hi guys. I've been bitten by the red gun bug lol. I got my first sks last month and I love it, now I've found myself looking at a couple mosin. But honestly I don't really know anything about them other than they were used by the Russians lol. Any tips on what to look for, years to look for, good place to buy? Etc.. I'd like to get one made during ww2 or maybe used during, that'd be pretty neat.

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys!

Nothing really to avoid people who made guns for the state were pretty carefull the consequences were pretty severe if they didn't.

I would suggest getting an ex sniper if your looking for accuracy. The ex snipers were hand picked from factory to be the best shooters and if the bore is still in decent condition, it will be your best friend.

I got a 1944 ex sniper by accident from ellwood. Got a great deal without realizing it until i brought it home and did the research. High wall, holes in reciever that were patched up, ground down scope S#, and even the stock was patched up from the slice they had to take out to fit the scope.

If you dont care, go cheap and have fun firing your baby.

I have seen and shot 2 of those Westrifle specials so far.

Both were 1943 and very nice refurbs with nice, clean bores. Both still had machining marks or barrels , receivers and all metal parts to the point of looking like made in someones blacksmith shop and not the factory. From what I'm told 42 and 43 production rifles all look like this-factories (all of them and not only with rifles)made a lot of changes to increase production output and save the materials. Both rifles shot very well with currently available surplus ammo.3-4 inch group right where I aimed without any sight adjustment necessary AND withoult bayo (too bad,I wanted to try it with bayo :)

I've seen close-up pictures of T-34 from this period and honestly finish on individual parts was unbelievable.I heard TT's and PPSH-41's can be found with the same level of finish (or lack of it ).

That's what makes them beautiful.

I like Westrifle because they have the special selection page and I like to be able to choose the stock color. I also look for nice roll marks and arsenal markings.

I just ordered a $130 Mosin from Westrifle. I'll post a pic as soon as it arrives.
