Anybody own them both?

Trying to decide which one to buy. I know the SVT-40 is cheaper to shoot but I have always wanted an Ag-42B for some reason.

Both are fine rifles.

I have an SVT-40 and she is one lovely rifle. I haven't shot an AG-42 but I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up at the right price.

You need them both. Then a Hakim so you can shoot the Ag in 8mm.

The SVT is a turn-key operation. Very little fiddling. Available ammo. You don't care if the it mangles the steel cases.

The Ag is arguably the most accurate semi you can buy and really nice ones can be had for < $300 if you're patient. Gotta roll your own ammo. Hard on fingers if you aren't paying attention. I bought mine from CGN member cam1936. Never regreted it for a moment.

Yea,

I actually don't shoot rifles a lot at this time and I am not set up to reload. I doubt either would get a ton of use, mainly for collection/ the occasional shoot. My pistols get a lot more use.

It seems like the fit and finish is nicer on the 42b, is that true?
Yes the AG42 are well finished but i cant complain on the SVT either. I have 3 SVT, 1 AG42 and 1 Hakim(big brother of the AG but in 7.92x57) I still prefer the SVT, must have been russian in a previous life:p but the AG is a wonderful shooter. Thoses rifles are VERY LOUD!! i found the Hakim to be the loudest.... so hearing protection is a must or you will regret:)
Surplus ammo for the SVT is widely available for now:D

SVT's right now are cheap and ammo is cheap. They were also used in a War or several smaller wars depending on which history book you like to read (WWII vs Winter War etc).

Have had them both and both are great fun. The AgM42b is definitely the better manufactured of the two - metal and wood fit and finish were both excellent on mine.
Today the ammo for the SVT is much easier to get but as mentioned the 42 is more accurate.
Until I re-focused on Canadian militaria (and guns) I had all the older semi's and while some weren't quite as accurate as others I did have a ton of fun with them.
Get one of each!!!

I've had a Hakim, AG42b, and SVT. They are all great designs and very reliable. They were all accurate. They all seem to have low recoil, they are comfortably hefty, and loud due to their muzzle brakes. If you plan to shoot alot, the SVT is probably the best choice due to ammo availability. If you are just hunting, casual shooting, AG42b and Hakim will be great too. I think all these rifles are alittle hard on spent brass, so not sure about how many reloads you can get out of the brass.

The AG42b is very nicely made and machined in the Teutonic fashion with attention to detail. The magazine is a piece of art in fit and finish. The Hakim is also nicely machined and finished. The SVT is typical Soviet hardware, alittle rougher in machine work, but still 100% reliable and functional. The Soviets machine fine finish only what is absolutely necessary (hence Khruschev's motto "Our quality is quantity"). None will disappoint you in reliability or accuracy.

get both
get the svt-40 first.then the ag42. the svt prices are low right now ,were as the ag prices are constant with surplus ammo being hard to get.

The SVT-38 was used during the Winter War (1939-40). The SVT-40 was used during the Continuation War (1941-1944).

Svt40 or Ag42b

Buy both ! I have both of them and there is no way you can go wrong with either one.Variety is the spice of life they say and when it comes to guns, I agree. Both guns are great to shoot, very little recoil, very accurate and both are different in their own sutle ways. I could not decide for years, and then after I bought one, I just had to try the other and so I ended up with both and love them. These are both lifers for me, my kids will get them. And when you concider that we are buying at usually half of what the Americans are paying, again, you can't go wrong.
