After looking at some of the pics on this forum, I realized that my K98 is missing a part (or possibly several parts). On the right side of the stock, I see that there is supposed to be a metal part in the slotted section (of the stock) between the barrel band and the muzzle band. On mine, the part(s) are missing and some bubba put a wood screw into the stock to hold the barrel band in place (it does not work very well). I can't figure out how to post pics, but my rifle looks like the 1st photo in the previous post (Newbie question on Mauser K98k). Can anyone give me any information on exactly what is missing and where I might be able to get the part(s)?

So the question is, is the slot there and a screw just rammed in? or no slot for the band.

EDIT: I should read the title for the year. lol

It sounds like you are missing a band spring that fits in the slot between the upper and lower bands on the front right side of the stock. Try Ebay.
Post pics anyways.

Pics are coming . . . one of the members on this site sent me a private email and offered to post my pics for me.

Fixed it for ya:)

On the right side, the front band spring is missing, that's why a screw have been put on the left side to hold the band in place. The missing part should be very easy to get. Beside that, your rifle is fine:)

Thank you for posting the pictures Jocelyn, I really appreciate it. Do you have any suggestion as to where I might find that part?

Okay....someone messed up.

1. Remove the screw.
2. Then remove the front barrel band.
3. Buy a new "front band spring" from Ebay, Tradex or Marstar.
4. Insert the new spring into the slot on the right side of the stock.
5. Turn the front band around and replace (originaly put in backwards). The hole that is currently on the left, should be on the right. That hole/indent slides over the distal end of the spring and snaps into place thus securing the spring.
6. Enjoy rifle and ingnore screw hole or oil or fill with wax with make it less apparent.

Cheers

Upon second examination, the stock looks like a duffle cut (GI's etc used to cut the stocks to fit them in their kit bags) and has been repaired (middle of stock - interesting location for the cut). The spring was probably lost in transit and repaired the best someone knew how. Interesting.

Tradex and Marstar dont seems to have, you can try Epps. Liberty tree in the U.S have the part and they ship to Canada, i have ordered from them and no problem. You can also look on the EE and place a WTB ad.

Yep, she is missing the band retaining spring. It is not hard to find so you should be able to locate a piece.

The front band is also backwards as the serial number should be on the left side.

Otherwise, a very nice Kar98k from 1941, you should be proud.

Thank you for all the replies, I appreciate it. The stock was unfortunately cut (as agentcq mentioned) and spliced back together with a hardware store metal splice plate and 4 ugly woods screws).

I can't see any pins or anything holding the front band in place, will it simply slide off?

Yes, the flat end of the spring will slide under the rear band and after depressing the other end of the spring, you slide the front band until the little pin on the spring catch the hole in the band.

To remove the front band:
1. Remove the screw;
2. Use a rubber or leather mallet to gently tap off (this prevents marring the metal. Some people use a brass or synthetic punch, but the brass can still sometimes mark the metal.)

On my rifle, the front band (the one closest to the muzzle) definitely does not have a screw. The only screw is the one that bubba installed to hold the other band in place (the one where the sling attaches). That band is loose and will easily slide off when I remove the screw. From what I can see, only friction is holding on the front band. I will see if it comes off with gentle tapping.

Otto, once you decide which parts you need you can pm me. I've likely got all of them, including a few original stock sets if you decide you want to find one that hasn't been cut in half.
