Hey guys. I bought an old Bushnell Banner 1.5-4x20 scope. Upon receiving it i instantly realized that there are scratches and chips on the lenses inside of it as well a a bunch of gunk(lint dirt etc).

I have no idea how old this scope is.

Does anyone know if bushnell's warrenty would cover fixing it? Has anyone been in the same boat and sent one in?

I did e-mail them, but I'm sure they get alot of mail in a day so I'm sure i won't hear back for a week or more. I just wanted to know if I should get my hopes up or not.

Is it possible it has been taken apart?

I doubt they will do anything on an old obsolete scope, but it is worth a shot. I sent in a discontinued model and it was replaced with a brand new model, but it was only a couple years old.

Hi bushnell? Ya, I have a 10-20 year old broken scope of yours.... can I have a new one?

Lol that would be nice, but like you say, doubtful. It may have been taken apart at some point. For the dirt to get in there that is the only way.

Does anyone know if it's possible to repair. And if it is possible, is it even cost effective? I really like the size of the scope and since I have it I'd rather try and spend a little money on it, than a bunch on a new one.

I'm just wondering if anyone's been in the same boat as me and what they have to say about it.

If it has been opened it will likely not be worth it for anything other than a range toy, as it will likely fog up and condense inside in any bad weather.

If it is as old as you say it probably isn't worth your time, and sending it to someone to repair would cost you the same as a new scope depending on the quality of it.

Is it really unusable as is?

yup it really is. I tried taking pictures, but i can't make any of them focus properly.. I suck at taking scope pictures.

Well I'll wait to hear back from bushnell I suppose. If anyone else has been in the same boat as me please share your story. thanks.

as for fogging up... well that would suck alot, but it's just going on a hi-point carbine so it can only be used at the range anyways. However that's going to be my 3gun rifle so it will get some abuse as well... meh. maybe bushnell will be glad to send me a new one for free lol.

when they reply I'll update the thread.

There seems to be a lot of Bushnell hate on this site from time to time. When I lived near their Scarborough repair facility, I took several older Bushnell scopes (and one old Simmons) in for evaluation and/or repair. These were all inexpensive, entry-level scopes (the Simmons was at least 20 years old). One scope had several parts replaced while I waited, maybe 10-15minutes. The Simmons was replaced with a current scope, one far superior in optical quality to the one I brought in.

I realize that sending your scope by mail won't be as convenient as dropping by in person, but I'll bet it would be worth your while.

Hmm that's was I was hoping to hear! lol I won't hold my breath though... Thanks for the info. John, how long ago was this?

If it had a lifetime warranty they would repair it for free (if they have the parts) or offer a new replacement they consider the equivalent. But the Banner wasn't/isn't one of their top lines, I don't think it ever had a lifetime warranty. They may repair it if they have the parts and you are willing to pay. You'll only know for sure when they answer.

Those scopes were taken in on several different occasions. The last one (the cheap Simmons) was maybe a year ago.

Tooner, the two Bushnells that I took in were both Sharpshooters, i.e. a grade or two beneath the Banner line in the Bushnell family. One was repaired on the spot, the other was replaced, no questions asked.

As I said, I don't think the Banner line ever had a lifetime warranty, but I'll add, I don't know that it never did.

I once sent in a pair of binoculars with a cover letter explaining a couple of problems and asking to be advised whether they could be fixed and if so, how much it would cost. I didn't hear back from them, they just fixed the binos and sent them back, no charge. They didn't even know whether I had bought them new (I didn't, which is why I didn't mention warranty to them.)

I like Bushnell. I think their products and the back up aren't the best but aren't bad. I call them good at the prices they charge.

Damn they replied fast! not what I wanted to hear though....

Dear Me,

Your used scope was manufactured in 1970. It carried a timed warranty period that has now expired.

Due to the age of the unit and the chipped lens, repairs would not be possible.

If it is sent to us, we would estimate for a replacement unit (the closest available model in the Banner line).

Subject: Banner Scope

Hello!

I recently aquired a used scope and unfortunately the lenes seem to have chips and there is a bunch of dirt inside of it. Before I send it off to your repair facility i was just wondering if it is still covered. Here is all the info that I could find on the scope itself.

Bushnell Banner 1.5-4x20
Made in Japan
no. F308323

If you could let me know if it is still covered by the warrenty I'd appreciate it. If you need any additional information I can try to provide it, but that is all the writing I could find on the scope to be an identifier.

Thank-you,
ME

and you'd be WRONG- all bushnells had a lifetime warranty up until about 85 or so even the sportsman/traveller/sportview lines, which are bottom of the barrel- banner was second to scopechief, and that was before the current elite lines- when the lenses were made in japan- same lifetime warranty went for binocs and kamera lenses as well- the only thing that was exempt was the electronic range finder- i used to work for a re-seller of bushnell, amongst other things- bushnell, sokkisha and wild- lietz-which was lieca

I love hearing history like that, thanks. So was that lifetime warranty on my Marine 7x50 binoculars supposed to be limited to the original purchaser or transferable to me when I bought them second-hand?

Almost all their scopes, other than electronics are covered by a lifetime warranty for the original owner.

That said they do not require proof of purchase when sending in their products for repair, and I was never asked when they replaced my scope.

Another interesting note is that they don't care where the product was purchased, and will fix anything I have purchased from the US, or elsewhere. Unlike at least one major manufacturer who many claim have the best service/repair policy.

a chipped lens and dust inside does indeed sound like ABUSE- and had you been the ORIGINAL owner( it says so right in the warranty card) , you might have got a different letter- at the shop i used to work at, we had some scopes dating back to ww2 and before that were still as good as the day they left the factory- mind you, they were GERMAN , and mounted on theodlites, but the cement and seals were still intact-

I don't know about that. I sent a Scopechief in a few years ago, and it was returned with a letter saying that the 25 year warranty was up.
