THINKING of polishing the bolt on my colt SP1...

Have been watching "Vietnam in HD" and noticed (not the first time) that early M16's had chromed bolt carriers

figured I could fake it by stripping and polishing the carrier IF parkerizing can be stripped

or do I go straight to a polishing wheel?
 
Keep in mind that without the parkerizing on your bolt and carrier, you leave your bolt open to rusting, especially with the heat that the bolt endures.

If you want a chrome plated carrier, sell your current bolt Assembly and buy a chrome plated bolt and carrier. The chrome plating they use on gun parts isn't some cheap ol' bumper chrome its thick and has to be applied with a perfectly clean surface so it won't chip off, so even going to some auto shop to get it plated isn't such a good idea.

Daniel Defense has chrome plated BCGs. Find a Canadian DD dealer and have them order it.

DPMS also makes a chromed BCG... maybe SFRC can get it?

As for removal, you have to mechanically remove parkerizing and if you do, the base surface will have been abraded likely by glass beading - so you would have a LOT of polishing to do.
 
you can muratic at canadian tire- buy the big bottle as its's just about as cheap as the small one- its in with the paints and asphalt sealer, that sort of stuff- as for using on a gun, i'd be shying AWAY from that
 
Muratic acid is Hydrochloric Acid. Used as a pH adjuster in pools, etc. It's quite cheap.

We discussed removing park with our platers as an 'what if' scenario. H2SO4 was mentioned, whether HCl could also do the job I don't know. If we had to remove park, we'd bead blast it. No need to play with chemicals.

For Sulfuric; I would assume that under a weaker solution you could erode the Phosphate more readily than the steel. Start low and work up. Don't just drop a carrier into a 1:1 of H2SO4. It might not be there in the morning.

You could likely buff it our by hand faster though. For one carrier it isn't worth it.


... In fact, we're nitriding carriers now. I could probably sell you a unfinished one.
