Tips on M305/M14 ownership

I was very unhappy with my M-305 shorty in the synthetic stock. I sanded down the sharp edges on the front top sections and it still was uncomfortable to shoot. I'm a Milsurp dude and just didn't like the rifle. I was planning on trading it for a Yugo Mauser but decided to give it another chance. I found a wood stock on the EE and swapped it out. I left the stock hand guard on and it looks ok.
It passed all the post assembly tests and I'm starting to feel the love.
I'm not sure what kind of stock it is. It has descent grain on it and an oil finish. It feels like a real rifle now.

Every picture you guys post makes me anxious to have my own lol

A question for all you guys (more out of curiosity than practicality):
If I were to pick up a short rifle with an 18" barrel, theoretically (i realize the cost of a new barrel would be fairly close to the cost of a second rifle), could I drop a longer barrel on to the rifle without changing any other parts or making major modifications??

Everyone usually wants to go the other way (longer to shorter). I can't see why not. It would probably cost a lot and you'd need special tools. You would probably be the first to do it.:D

I want to share a little story for those people that think norinco/poly tech m14's are junk. I got my rifle in 1991,and about a month after myself and a buddy were heading out to hunt the elusive snow gopher and do some early spring blasting out in the hills. So buddy pulls up in the driveway and I come out of the house with the rifle and as I am almost to the truck I remember that I forgot the key for the trigger lock. I leaned the up against the side of the truck and raced back to the house for the key. When I came out of the house here was my buddy parked on the street waiting for me. Guess where the m14 was?? Yep laying in the driveway with a tire track from a mid '80s chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 right down the whole length of the gun! The only damage was a broken stock behind the trigger. Milarm in Edmonton had an original m14 stock for $80 and it was camo so I was happy about that. This gun was scoped too! However, since then I have torture tested that gun to hell and back. It has fired off literally thousands of rounds of surplus ammo and never once had a cleaning rod down the barrel. I recently bought a millet 4-16 atac camo scope and a nice mount from marstar so I thought I better treat it to a nice cleaning before I headed out to line up the new scope. Just as I thought, it touches bullet holes at 100 yards. This has been the rifle I have hunted coyote, deer ,moose and even the fierce gopher with for over 20 years now! I hope you like your m14 as much as I do, but don't drive over it ok ? Cheers!
 
I drove over one of my cooey 64b's years ago , by accident, with my K5 blazer .... The rifle did not survive.... I shoulda bought an m14 instead LOL
 
I drove a trailer loaded with a quad over an M14 once too, blew it out with brake cleaner lubed it again, and good to go. They are a tough rifle.

Have learnt a ton about this rifle and firearms in general over the past few weeks.

Another question for you all:
What are the quality/design differences between the polytech and the norinco??
I have read that the polytechs often have a nicer finish, tighter fitting stocks, and also a harder bolt. Any truth to any of that?

Do you like the Millet ATAC? does it shape up well with the norinco? im wanting one but dont know about it as ive heard these guns chew up scopes for breakfast.

Nice man. When it's wrapped in a wood stock it's just sooooo right.

Plan on getting some wood :eek:. Have the USGI connector with the JAE so she's primed.

My next little project ;)
 
M14 owner tips?

1- Put off spending your money on tacticool stuff and buy up all the 7.62X51 and .308 ammo you can get your hands on instead;)

2- Buy a Garand rear sight, make sure the barrel is indexed, then learn to dial her in out to 500m using your giant ammo stash:ar15:
