Any Steyr shooters on this forum. Breaking in my first firearm, the Steyr M9A1. I am new to shooting and new to guns. Wanna know how you feel about your Steyr.

Love to see pics and descriptions of any mods you may have done too!

ive been thinking about getting one, how do u like yours?

As far as 9mm pistols go it's OK, hard to compare, I have only shot a few and not side by side. Still getting used to it, still breaking it and me in. The trigger is too heavy and rough for my liking - I prefer the 1911 trigger. Sights are cool, but hard to get an effective picture either back or front is out of focus, maybe its my eyes. Low muzzle rise is great though (American Eagle 124gr FMJ)

It is a sweet looking pistol IMO.

I use to own one but sold it because I needed funds. If you go visit the steyr forum, you can find simple guides on how to clean up the trigger pull. Mods include installing a weaker striker spring, polishing stainless guide rod. This pistol was my very first and I didn't really know how to shoot it properly. I would love to shoot one again...

I thought about getting one but with so many other better striker fire pistols out there, I passed it up.

Steyr had a real chance to make a modern pistol but oped out for a glock gen 1 style gun.

I have two m40A1s. The first, bought used I broke a sear spring in, has since been replaced and works fine now. My other, purchased new went 500 rds without issue. I used it for Black Badge and I had quite a few FTE's the first day. In it's defense it was my first batch of reloads so I that may have contributed. I removed, cleaned and reinstalled extractor. Second day worked great till later half of afternoon when I had another FTE and several FTF. Took home and found a minuscule piece of brass shaving in striker channel which provably led to the FTF's. I love the feel of these pistols in my hand, but not sure if I would use for CCW were we permitted to do so in Canada.

Nice pictures! I don't own one yet, but they sure feel comfortable in my hand. I think it's SteyrClub.com that has the tutorial on a trigger job?

Yes, steyrclub has lots of good info. I am not willing to spend too much on this gun yet but I will do striker spring mod to improve the trigger feel.

:D you can't have both sights in sharp focus.
Get the front one in focus and the blur of the rear around it.
And by the way, the triangular sights are not for target shooting but rather for quick target acquisition. The front triangle should cover the bullseye.

Just sold my unfired M9AI
Definitely the best feeling most natural pointing pistol that I've had in my hands.

Why did I sell it ???

BTW OP it's ROLL CALL

One thing I have found doing triggers on the these that applies to pretty much all striker fired guns: polish the firing pin hole. Don't go in there with a reamer or drill but if you have a tiny hone or can rig one and do a basic "cylinder hone" pattern on the striker hole you will find that cleans up the trigger squeeze a lot on Steyrs, Glocks and S&Ws (among others). You can do it with just rolled fine emery or crocus cloth too but again take your time. It takes a lot of patience to smooth it out evenly but it is worth the efforts. I remove the factory lube and apply a VERY fine coating of Lubriplate to the striker body and the striker hole (there are other moly based greases that work too I just have had luck with that one).

A touch of Lubriplate on the connector sliding parts after stoning the contact surfaces also helps but usually they are pretty good. Like a 1911, making these good is all in the details.

One thing I just noticed Kendo said he had FTFs with his M9: I had lots with MilSurp 9mm IVI and DA when we first got the M9 in. Speaking to the factory they were surprised but on checking the firing pin/striker spring was found to need a bit more preload to reliably hit and ignite Canadian Military primers. They shipped me a bunch of spacers which go on the BACK of the striker spring assembly and add about 0.040" of additional preload and I haven't had an issue since with any of the guns I have sold. You just have to be sure you get the spacer at the back or the preload doesn't help.

If anyone has issues like this I can probably help them out with a spacer and a photo of where to install it.

Thanks Odelling.

I just ordered this BT guide rod mod to improve trigger feel. I will update when I get it done.

I just got back from range after shooting 150 rounds using three brands of ammo. CCI Blazer 115gr FMJ, Federal AE 124gr FMJ, Rem UMC 147gr FMJ (flatter nose). I had one FTE with the Blazer but I expected more. Weird, some members of Steyr club don't like Remington cartridges.

But Legi0n is right, I cant shoot accurate with those triangular sights. LoL.

When i owned this pistol, i had the BT guide rod installed along with a lighter striker spring. The trigger was very nice and light...when dirty...

i put a couple hundred rounds through one at a local range, i really enjoyed the feel of the gun, i had no issues at all. My only complaint were the sights, i could not get use to the triangle, i would have been replacing sights right away. It was on my short list of striker fird pistols to buy, i went with the Ruger SR9 instead. I might still pick one up someday.
