All 870s will safely fire 3" shells when fitted with a 3" chambered barrel. Guns that were built as 2-3/4" only have a different ejector that may cause fired 3" shells to hang up on the front of the ejection port. Replacing the ejector will fix this; all 870 receivers are the same.
Wingmasters will have M in the serial number to designmate a 3" mag receiver a V is a 2 3/4". There are two express receivers 2 3/4& 3" and 2 3/4- 3 1/2.
Not all of each version is stamped 2 3/4 & 3" some are plain, or stamped express or magnum . On 2 3/4-3 1/2 I have seen plain or stamped super magnum or express super magnum pending the year they were made. There may be other stampings out there also god knows with remington
question... when I went to verify my 870 thru the CFC 1-800 number today, It's a wingmaster and at the end of the serial number is a V and it is indeed a 2 3/4 as stamped on the side.. but they were telling me it should also have an A or B in front of the serial#.... no where near the Sn on receiver or barrel is there either letter.... above the sn on the barrel is a couple of squiggly symbols plus the letter A... but I don't think that is what they are looking for.... any ideas?
They did say call them back if it doesn't have it and they will figure it out... I hope...
All 870 barrels were date coded with a letter. Here is a chart and click the link it will show where. Some receivers had a letter most didnot. I found the barrel was the true date if one in front of the serial number on the receiver it was usually a range of like 5 years. She thinks all should have one and they don't.take care
