Are you familiar with animals that lived here in North America 15,000 years ago? Here are some interesting beasts from days gone by....

The American Scimitar Cat - about 400lbs

The American Lion - up to 750lbs

The Giant Short Faced Bear - up to 1800lbs

American Mastadon - the size of an Asiatic Elephant:

It's interesting to think that our ancestors probably hunted, fought or were killed by some of these beasts. Too bad they're extinct now, the two cats are superb.

Can you imagine the moves on those big cats?

Here are some more...

Smilodon Fatalis - up to +600lbs (a South American version "Smilodon the Devastator" weighed up to 1000lbs!)

Camelops

And the Dire Wolf - these were up to 175lbs.

Stag Moose

And the Irish Elk - which lived in Europe, but is noteworthy as the largest deer ever- how does a 12 foot antler spread sound?

Cool!
I'm almost finished building a time machine so I can score some smoking deals on 303 and 30-06 ammo, and all sorts of milsurp guns from the 1950's, so maybe I'll dial it back a few millennium and knock over some of those animals too.

Hey, they are already extinct, so its not like I'm hunting an endangered species, right?

They have samples of 14' spreads on Irish elk in some European castles from days gone by............very nice picks.......BTW........Harold

Hey tootall you better get a better time machine than the Terminator had or you`ll wake up bare a** naked. Maybe practice your spear making skills before heading out. :D

and the best spear for giant short faced bear defense question was spotted on a nearby cliff wall!!!!

:D:D:D

Neat thread, great pics. The amazing thing about these is that they're not like dinosaurs, i.e. extinct for a bazillion years. These things were running around practically yesterday.

American Lion for me! What a rug!!!

Tootall, maybe you will invent that time machine...maybe you already did...allowing you and others to go back and hunt these amazing critters...creating a temporal hunting industry which, according to the antis, will/did cause the extinction of these creatures...making the world safe enough for humanity to evolve...resulting in you, who invented the machine that allowed it all to happen...

I have a headache.

We also had some kind of super bison, I've seen skulls dug up by placer miners. Anyone got renditions of them?

Yes, you are probably talking about the Steppe Bison. The spread of their horns, from tip to tip was +1m.

This mummified specimen known as "Blue Babe" was found in Alaska in 1979. Estimated live weight was around +1700lbs, so similar to a large modern bull Wood Bison.
