Neat thread, great pics. The amazing thing about these is that they're not like dinosaurs, i.e. extinct for a bazillion years. These things were running around practically yesterday.

That is what I was thinking too. Not only that, but some of the animals that are alive today shared the forrest with these animals!

The Giant Shortfaced Bear was almost identicle to our modern coastal grizzly in it's largest form. The 375 is considered excellent medicine for these boys so I think a 500NE might be considered adequate, or overkill !!! Not many shoot the 500 NE well enough to consider it as a good defensive firearm.

They were big! But I am sure a .375 would do fine...

Yes, those are interesting too. There were Giant Beavers - up to 8' long and +200lbs.

imagine what the pelt off one of them suckers would be worth

There was also the Giant Ground Sloth, about ten feet tall. I saw a mummified one in the Grand Canyon Caverns in California. Very cool.
