I'm having a difficult time deciding between these two rifles - wondering what thoughts are out there... pros, cons, things to consider..
Cost would be about the same after upgrades and goodies

Mini with Promag Sparta stock, although I do like the rifle plenty with the regular synthetic stock it ships with..

I would likely buy the Pistol grip, railed handguard and some magpul..

Check the backlog on posts against the mini-14 and prepare yourself for many people to post "I had a mini and sold it because it couldn't shoot straight past the end of the barrel".

I like my mini, it's a 581 series stainless. Never had a ftf but I have had several fte, I am told that this is due to stainless steel extractors (????).

Ruger mags are expensive, if you wanna tacticool it out the higher-cap mags are VERY expensive.

SU-16 takes AR mags which is a bonus. Other than that I've never even seen one irl

10 round mags are cool, but i think the mini 14 is more bang for you buck....meaning they are priced the same but the mini 14 is a better rifle...if it wasnt for our laws this would all be moot

I cannot comment on the SU-16 but I have an early 580 series stainless Mini 14 with skinny barrel. The accuracy is not as bad as the mini haters say..2 moa at 100 yrds. Mine has the "pencil" barrel and its good enough for what I use it for which is hunting. Currently worked up a few reloads but waiting on better weather to test. Reliability?? After 200 rds, no fail to ejects or fire. I had one fail to feed due to the magazine. It was a Tapco mag. The mag follower would hesitate as it got near the top. Using OEM Ruger, unknown stainless and blued steel mags, I have had zero issues.

Cons, mags are more expensive(pricing has come down) and every one I had except OEM mags have needed fitting. The rear sights are hard to adjust due to not knowing adjustment increments and you will need a tool...but they do hold and work and are easy to use and fast. If you are putting it in a Sparta stock, then you wouldnt worry about this anyways. As far as accessories go, not much out there...again depends on your application. If going in a Sparta stock or the Troy MCS(discontinued), then you now have rails to add all the goodies to blow your whistle. Stock trigger is a little gritty and slight overtravel. A good trigger job("polishing" sear and hammer faces) will take up much slack and lighten the trigger somewhat. To stop overtravel, I drilled and tapped a screw right behind the trigger and adjusted it until there was absolutely no overtravel.

Keltec is not worth what it sells for here!

And if your adding the pistol grip stock, you are spending a lot of money on a gun that IMHO is not even close to the same quality as the Mini 14.

The obvious benefit to the keltec is the AR mags but that's about it.

I won't own a gun that will break if I drop it or step on it. There are airsoft guns with better build quality if you ask me.

I have had the Mini-14 stainless for 2 years now. I added a Har-Bar strut on it. Never fails me. Light, manuverable and quite accurate. It groups 2 to 3 inches at 100 yds with the strut. 4 inches before the strut. I can hit my 200 yd, 12 inch gong all day long. Great for plinking and coyote hunting.

Love my 581 mini. My favorite rifle. S/S and syth stock. Best truck gun ever owned. The 180 series had worn out tooling towards the end of the run, which has contributed to their bad name accuracy wise

All this and under 8lbs fully loaded and take 10 round pistol mag's

Any questions?
As for the people that say 858 please do not insult that rifle the 858 deserves the 7.62. Not no variment round like the 223.

What Satain said. What's not to love. My PRS stock is a touch heavy so mine comes in at just under 10lbs. Accuracy is quite good and consistant also. Goes through the ammo fast when you have 2 10rders coupled together!!

CSA VZ 58 in 5.56.

Agreed. Pay $200 more than buying an su-16 and get way better value for money. To each their own, but the appearance of the su-16 is nausea inducing for me. Plastic reciever, really? I went trick or treating with more masculine toy guns as a kid. The only plus of the su-16 I can imagine is that one could remove their mags from the compartment in the butt stock and use it to carry tampons for the gf/wife.
