I have two beautiful non-refurbished SKS's that will always stay original, however, my one refurb has changed into more cloths than a transgendered crossdresser.

Lately, I've given thought to building a BOB (aka SHTF bag), and I wanted to add a lightened and shortened, weatherproof SKS. I looked high and low for a synthetic stock without all those ghey picatinny rails and M14-style buttstocks. The only one I could find was an early generation ATI lightweight folding stock. Luckily, I found one in mint condition from a fellow CGN'er.

I've heard alot of negative press about them, and rightfully so... barreled actions moving around in the stock and wobbly folding buttstocks aren't exactly attractive features!

Well, with a small cut of thin black leather (for the handguard), a small strip of aluminum tape, a thin metal washer, and a trigger group "kick-out spring" (from a Tapco stock kit), I have one solid and handy SKS. The stock actually fits better/tighter than my "arsenal fitted" blonde laminate stock. Total mod time: 1/2 hour.

The buttstock does have a slight "wobble", but nothing significant enough to affect performance.

All the metal was parkerized and Arma-coated (olive green) by Murdoc. I also have a matching tacticool 5/30 magazine (parkerized and Arma-coated). But my goal was minimal crap and more "function". :)

A small cut of thin black leather (from an old wallet) carefully placed between the metal ferrule and nylon handguard -- no more movement of the handguard:

Stock "shimmed" with a small washer, and I added a trigger group "kick-out spring" (from a Tapco stock kit). A small cut of aluminum tape placed in the usual spot -- no more up/down movement of the barreled action in the stock:

Looks nice and functional, I usually don't like the look of any of the ATI stuff, but I actually like this. The metal contrast looks pretty cool.

nice!, sks is always a good choice for SHTF scenarios. tough and rugged design and you can cut the pin out of the mag and make it hold 10 rounds (ONLY to be done if it really is SHTF, like riots, zombies, war, etc. at that point common law enforcement has other things to worry about then your mag cap).

I think the cfc wouldnt like youre mag holding more than 5rds even if BIG shtf..
They would fight to the bitter end to uphold the law.lol,;)

Side note; Have they astablished a limit to how many zombies you can poke with a bayonette?

love what you've done...i like the ati folder(just not for scopes)...i fixed the wobble problem by drilling a hole in the folder joint where a pin (or bolt) could be inserted for a tight lockup...worked well...how does the duracoat hold up on the levers where you dismantle gasguard or receiver cover???

So far so good with the Arma-coat. No noticeable wear anywhere.
Good idea on fixing your wobble. Can you post pictures so that we can see?

I decided to play with the ATI folder today. There was a bit of a wobble in the folder joint, so I removed most of the play doing this:

Simply cut the aluminum lid to fit using a pair of scissors and drill a 3/8 inch hole. 15 minutes work.

A lid from any aluminum food container will do. I used a lid from a green tea container.

75% of the "wobble" is now gone. I could go more aggressive and add two aluminum shims and really firm things up.

This stock is worth the small fitting effort.
I used to own a Tapco T6, and I prefer how this stock fits. It is lighter, more compact, and with an ideal length of pull (for me). I also think it looks better, as I am not really into the "tacticool" look with unnecessary picatinny rails, laser sights, and other black doodads ! :) But of course, whatever floats your boat. Cheers.
