Confused about sights.

So I am looking to get new 'iron sights' for a rifle I just bought. A Savage Mk II FSS.

I have to admit I am getting really confused and was hoping someone might be able to straighten me out a bit.

So I am looking at a few of the fibre optic sights available, and when I try to narrow it down if it will mount on the savage, they keep sending me to muzzleloading models. Is that right? Are the muzzleloader sights that they have been directing me to interchangeable with the .22lr sights for my rifle? I'm getting really confused here and would like a word of advice or two.

Failing that if people could suggest a sight that would work, that would be great too.

Why do you want to put iron sights on a gun designed for optics? Even if you find some it will probably be tough to shoot well as the drop in the stock is designed to place your eye 1.5" above the bore for optics use. I don't think anyone makes them for a direct mount as that gun didn't have them originally. You would have to get the barrel drilled and tapped for the front sight at the very least and probably the rear also so a fairly expensive undertaking. You would have to find some general fit type and have them mounted by a gunsmith. Get a scope, make sure it either has an AO if it is a larger magnification model or designed for .22 use if it is a lower power model. Spend as much as you can on the scope and you will be happier than you will be with a cheapy. Bushnell Banners are a good buy, just make sure it has AO or is set to be parallax free at 50yds. I prefer AO models myself as they are more versatile.

Um....the rifle has iron sights on it already, but they are not working for me at the range I am currently shooting at. So I want to swap them out is all and the whole muzzleloader thing is confusing me. I am shooting a progression here and learning to shoot with the iron sights before I learn with the scope is all. Each time I put another 500 rnds downrange my groups are getting tighter, I am just getting tired of aiming at the rings instead of the bullseye.

It isn't time for me to go up to a scope yet.

Are you sure it's a Mk2 FSS and not a regular Mk2 F or G? When I do a search for the FSS model, the ones I find (on Savagearms.com) come up as stainless steel with scope only models. The F & G models come with iron sights.

Use some fluorescent paint, green or orange and put a small dab on the front sight blade, that may help better than replacing it with a fiber optic sight. They are usually larger and will serve to actually block out more of the sight picture and your target.

Hmmm....I begin to see the problem.....it isn't an F or G because the entire assembly is in stainless. The clip I have is different too than the FSS shown. Hmmm...could it be first run or something?....there is no model type listed on it other than Savage Mark II and the serial number of the rifle.....what am I missing here? Should I call savage and confirm the rifle type from the serial numbers?

I had hoped that the fiber optic sight would be smaller, but if it isn't then I may as well go with the glow in the dark nail polish dot that the guys at the range suggested.

Thanks....I look deeper into the model of the rifle.

Sorry, you said FSS and that is what I looked at also as above. I would check out Williams as they make a lot of iron sights for different models or you might find some info here if you haven't seen it already, ht tp://rimfireshooting.com/index.php?showtopic=5245 Also try ht tp://savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php Good idea checking with Savage also.
