Having my 8.5 treaded for turkey choke... Pics added...

With the help of a few fellow CGNers i will take arrangements to have my 8.5 barrel treaded to specs so i can use a Super elongated .650 turkey choke, after testing over the Oehler P-35 i noticed that there was most of the velocity left, lost with slug is 18-20% so should be about the same with a 3 inch turkey load of #5... That could become the best turkey gun ever... JP.:)

I do hunt with a 18 inch 11-87 3inch what would be the difference. After installing the super Xfull choke, i will do patterning test, if i can get a good killing pattern at 30 metres, since it is so short mouvement will be easier when the gobbler past behind a tree or a rock, out of the 40 gooblers i shot 30 were inside 20 metres, when i started hunting turkey in NY state i would shoot from far 40-45 metres, after i got the hang of it ,i realize that you can bring them so close, i shot a dozen a 10 metres or less, for myself my fun is to take them as close as possible... JP.
 
I think it's a great idea, I'm doing the exact same thing, I was going to take mine to Simmons or Epps. Im also going to use my choked 8.5 for coyotes, small game, and deer.
 
I love short-barreled turkey guns. The typical 24-inch barrel results in a gun that is still pretty ungainly if you're all brushed-up. I've taken birds with my 14-inch Fabarms pump and an H&R 10-gauge single that I had shortened dwon to a 20-inch tube and threaded. That cheapo 10-gauge single is by far my favourite turkey gun.

Having said that...is it reasonable to assume that there is some degradation of the pattern density in ultra-short barrels? A non-scientific comparison shows me that the best patterns from a 28-inch Remington, a 21-inch Remington and a 24-inch Benelli were all somewhat better than the best patterns achieved with the 14-inch Fabarms and the 20-inch H&R. The 14-incher was used with the Fabarms choke, an oddball extended choke that threaded externally to the barrel. The 10-gauge was fitted with an extra-full turkey choke made by the gunsmith who cut and threaded the tube. The others had various aftermarket turkey chokes installed. I tried several loads in each gun to find the best choice in each.

The Benelli Nova (24-inch) was an honest-to-God 50-yard gun, if you were inclined to shoot that far (I'm not). The two Remingtons were not very far behind. The two shorties were 35-40 yard guns with their best loads.

Would/could a 8.5-inch super-shorty be made into a practical turkey gun? It would be fun! If I still lived on turkey range, I know that I'd be threading mine to a standard thread and trying out choke after choke to create the ultimate mini-super-turkey-slayer.

p.s. Caramel, if you do this...and I can't stress this strongly enough!...PUT ON PANTS before taking photos to post here.
 
I can't speak to the legality in Ontario but it would be illegal to hunt with in BC. It would be defined as a handgun, as barrel length had to be over 12 inches. So hopefully Ontario hunting regs use different definitions.
 
I will send email and asked Canada Fireams of possibles restriction in hunting situation, will clear this as soon as possible, but i am still going tru with my move... Que sera sera... JP.

BC Ministry of Environment has its own laws on what they classify as a handgun?

Hunting laws are provincial, nothing to do with the feds.

Just got this interresting info on B.C. firearms regulation for turkey hunting....FIREARMS FALL UNDER THE CRIMINAL CODE AN ARE THEREFORE REGULATED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNEMENT NOT THE GOVERNEMENT OF BRITISH COLOMBIA ALL INQUIRIES SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE CFC... Here you go sir, you have a paper that saying it is non-restricted and it is a 12 shotgun, you are good to go... JP.;)
 
i have shot slugs out of an 8.5 inch barrel at the range and had a nice group at 50 yards using a bead sight .the gun was cylinder choke .i look forward to hearing how your gun works with a choke and i am sure you will have a gun that will do the job on a turkey .as for hunting regulations in Ontario i have seen no restrictions on barrel length on a shotgun .
 
The 8.5 grizzly is not intented to be shot from one hand, you will have one hand on the pump an one hand to pull the trigger or bye bye wrist... JP.

Or not and. Doesn't matter if it's fired one handed. Nothing to do with federal definitions on handguns but I'd rather not get in an argument with a CO during a hunting trip.

But if it's fair game in Ontario go for it I think that would be cool. I wouldn't mind chokes in mine.
