I posted this over in Gear & Equipment but when I posted pics thought it would be more likely to buzz someone over here.
OK gents – this is for those of you looking for a kydex holster and not wanting to deal with the crazy wait times quoted by Raven or some of the other makers out there. I have been working for a number of weeks now with several holsters made by Bad Karma Holsters LLC of Jefferson City Missouri (google is your friend) and have to say I’m more than a little bit impressed –both with the product itself, but more importantly to me, with the man behind the product, Landon Gillam.
I read an on-line review of one of Landon’s holsters some time back, long enough ago that I’ve since lost it, but I believe it was on LightFighter Forums, and it prompted me to drop Landon a line. Response was immediate and the price was right so I placed an order. I was initially looking for a straight-drop holster for an M&P40 with a Streamlight TLR-1 mounted and up to that time had not found one at a decent price and with a reasonable wait time. That was about to change.
The only delay incurred was completely initiated by me and consisted of telling Landon to hold off on shipping my holster as I’d ordered the same set-up for a buddy for his 226R with TLR-1 mounted and Landon had to wait for a Blue Gun to come in to do that job. I also ordered 2 single mag pouches per pistol at the same time and all of it shipped together.
Upon receiving them I discovered that Landon had shipped the M&P holster as ordered but the SIG holster was a standard holster for no light. I called Him up and he stated that he would have the right holster out to me in a couple of days and to keep the one that he’d shipped at no charge, his guarantee was for 100% customer satisfaction. Pretty hard to beat that, and I had the other holster 7 days after I spoke to him.
The holsters were all very well made and I unfortunately shipped the SIG holsters off to my buddy before taking any pics of it however I do have pics of the M&P holster and mag pouches, as well as my subsequent order, that I will post up as soon as I get a download cable for my camera.
here is the "group shot - 2 holsters with a single mag pouch per and the AR mag pouch:
The holsters all have a body shield or sweat guard on the back side that comes up fairly high and when I have any more made I will have this reduced so that it just reaches the back of the slide release on both my Glocks and my M&P’s. Not a major issue and you can trim it yourself with a dremel or belt sander, but I thought it was worth a mention – personal preference really.
I was impressed with the fit and finish of all the items that he sent, the holsters in particular – kind of hard to get really special with a mag pouch but nothing wrong there at all either. What I found really neat was that he sent the holsters with belt loops mounted, but with J-hooks for the front of the holsters that would allow them to be carried IWB if one so desired (I’m not sure if this is a standard thing or whether I was getting some extra “Try” stuff as his first Canadian customer
). While the M&P holster was on the bulky side for that sort of thing it did actually work pretty well and was VERY concealable, I decided to call Landon back and have him do a holster up for my Gen2 Glock 23 to test the IWB properties of his holsters out. Landon informed me up front that he only had a mold for a Gen3 with rail but if I was willing to gamble on it he'd do one up with the understanding that if I was dissatisfied in any way he'd make it right or take the holster back - kind of hard to turn down a deal like that!!!!
So an email and a week later and what appears in my mailbox but a G23 holster, another single mag pouch and a single mag pouch for a 30 rd MagPul PMag!!!!! The Glock fit with not a hint of wiggle, even though the molding for the rails showed very evidently when you looked at the holster. I am a happy cat.
I attached the J-hooks to this one and off to the range I went to try things out. There is no cant to this holster so it is best suited to carry at the 3 0’clock position or forward to include AIWB, not something I’m particularly comfortable with a Glock. An HK P7 PSP is no issue for my mental state in that position (and I have a Comp Tac “2 O’clock” for that purpose), but the Glock gives me the willies – not so much the “carrying it pointed at my thigh” all the time, but the act of re-holstering makes my stomach do flip flops..
I have a 37” arm so I can actually get away with 3:30 and it is fast to get into action, but anyone with a short torso may have issues with IWB behind the hip. Do keep in mind though that Landon will make this up for you with whatever cant you wish, just ask when you order. He will make it with no cant at all as mine is but his standard is 15 degrees.
I ordered the PMag pouch for wear on the left side with bullets to the rear for a “beer can” grip and it works exceptionally well in that position, and as I stated with the holster it is FAST, probably the fastest rifle mag pouch I’ve used yet – I’m going to order another of these for sure and that should do me for rifle pouches, and I will probably grab another single for the Glock at the same time.
From their website:
Our standard holsters are available for Glock 17,19,22,23,26,31,32,33, Walther P22, Sig P226 with or without rails, Sig P229R CZ 75, H&K USP 45C, S&W MP 9, 40 (full size and compact) and 45 in full size only.
We offer kydex holsters in Digital Camo in Woodland and Urban, Police blue, Safety Orange, Coyote Brown, Chocolate, Khaki Olive Drab, Carbon Fiber and Black.
Holsters are also available for weapons with attached weaponlights.
I paid $55 per holster, $35 per single mag pouch (doubles are another $10) and $45 for the AR pouch. I think the product that Landon produces is second to none and although I’ve use kydex from Blade-Tech, Comp Tac, Kaluban Cloak and Raven, I have not used any that were better than Landon’s.
And he will ship to Canada - just make sure you specify USPS Priority Post...
Drop Landon a line and tell him blake recommended him to you...
