Critique my immediate action & reload drills

So, this was the first time doing any live reload and immediate action drills with my CZ. I know they're slow, but is there anything else that I should/shouldn't be doing?

I never realized how much more fun doing drills were compared to just shooting paper :D
 
I bring my left hand under the rifle and slap the bolt to release it. I prefer it to going over top.
Whats the vest you're using? AK?

How are you inducing your stoppages? Hopefully it wasn't just your rifle?:)

It's nice to see people out working on improving their skill sets.

In my limited experience the only major thing I would change is that when you have a stoppage and you have to pull the mag (instead of doing a tap-rack- bang IA because you see the problem or whatever), I'd dump the mag, not try to hold onto it and work the charging handle. That can cause all kinds of problems, especially if you are under some sort of stress. If you have an extra mag in your vest, dump the old one because it may have actually facilitated the stoppage, clear the problem, insert a new mag and re-engage. You may get a little faster reloads if you keep your gun up at eye level a little more and angle the magwell so you can actually see part of the mag insertion into the well. I know it helps me as I find the rocking motion of the VZ mag a fussy operation.

I'm sure guys that have a lot more experience than I will offer more tips. Looks like you had a fun time!:)
 
Looks good. Speed isn't everything. Being able to do them in a fluent motion with a minimum number of movements is way more important.

Why don't you use a dump pouch? Works great.

Yeah, I've seen that done before. I find it a bit awkward, but I'll give it a go next time.
I'm using an Eagle Universale SKD rig. Really nice piece of equipment.

I induced stoppages by putting an empty piece of brass in the magazine. When I had the major stoppage, I had the empty loaded in first, which obviously caused a huge cluster####. I learned after that I could have mortared the rifle, rather than stopping and getting a hammer to tap the charging handle.

Ah, okay that makes sense. I need to buy a couple more magazines (I only have three :( ). I feel that it would make such operations easier.

Thanks. Like you said, I figure that getting the technique down pat first is more important than looking like a tactifool and spinning mags off everywhere as fast as I can.
Also, I don't have a dump pouch, but I might look into getting one. Easier than trying to re-pouch empty mags and keeps them from getting confused.

Thanks for the tips thus far, guys. I was going to go shoot some more drills today, but we got a huge dumping of snow last night. Bah :mad:

  1. Get a bolt release.
  2. First string. Shoot 4 then reload. Shoot 5 then reload. And so on and so on untill your out of mags.
  3. When reloading always try to keep you rifle and focus pointed at the target.
  4. Practice reloading with empty magazines to prevent you from moving ones rifle and sight from the target. Musscle memory is the key.
  5. Also by keep your self square to the target and in a boxing stance you will find that it is much shorter distance from your fresh mag to the rifle. Meaning hunch a little ;)
  6. Finnaly the rifle always comes up to your head. Your head never comes down to the rifle. This is key.
A little trick that some of us 3 gunners do is have a spare mag ready in our pocket. So when the beep goes off we start with 6 instead of 5. Then that way every time you count 1,2,3,4,5 you reload. Thus preventing you from needing to rack the rifle. Again saving you time. And finnaly and most importantly SMILE :D cause it's fun ;). (Another words try to relax. IF you are tense you get fustrated easly and hence you are more prone to more f'ups.)
 
As Satain has stated count your rounds. 1-2-3-4-dump, insert, 1-2-3-4-5-dump, insert, 1-2-3-4-5-6.....bolt's open. (3 mags)
Aside from clearing a jam (FTF, FTE) you shouldn't have to operate the charge handle. Your shooting so there is always 1 in the chamber. and X2 on the :D

yes stop throwing your mags on the ground a dump pouch is the way to go,what if you need to reload the mags and there all full of mud and sand then youve got problems
 
Looks like you're already building a great base for you skillset.

There's another trick you can add to this to really get your reload speeds down and your situation awareness up.

Load random number of rounds in each mag, mix them up, then have at it.

When you shoot to lock or to a malfunction, you can actually feel a slight difference in the recoil. When you learn to recognize this, you'll already be ahead of game by narrowing down what the stoppage is.

I was under the impression that the CZ-858 was as reliable (some say even more so) as an AK-47? :p :D

I agree with the guys on dumping your mags on the ground. HOWEVER, if speed counts IMO, just drop em. They can be taken apart for cleaning.

Working on a video that uses a different technique. Be up in a little while. :)

Never realized that maybe just for the 'fun' of it (and added firearm performance) I should do this too with my CZ.

Hard to take apart with that damn rivet in the way. Bring the rifle up a bit and have the chamber in front of your face that way you keep your head up and can still see whats happening in front of you. When the mag is loaded and the rifle still at a 45 with the muzzle up reach across from underneath the rifle and pull the handle down to release. Let it fly forward and move the rifle into ready position. Dump bags are nice but don't lose time dicking around with a loose mag you can always get it later

What rivet? :D Kidding. True that though, but it can be done.

I have tried the "under the rifle" charging method, but I seem to have alot more human errors, but like anything else I guess. Practice, practice, practice.
 
I grab the next mag before I dump the spent one. I use my thumb and knuckles to eject the old mag then slap the new one in and hit the charging handle

I could do a rifle course of fire in a 3 gun match and be nearly as fast as the ar15 guys running 10rnd mags

Hmmm if I tried that I might drop more full mags then empty ones. I got tiny hands, and holding a mag while doing other operations isn't really an option.
