Anyone here own one of these? Or shot one? They look interesting. Im currently trying to decide one my first handgun. Everyone recommends I buy a glock however they are slightly more than im willing to spend.

Any opinions on this gun?

I have one and like it better than my glock, I think you can get them for 550 which is a deal. The only downside is a lack of aftermarket support. If you can shoot one at a range in Van then I would recommend doing that.

Well you do not need much support :). You can get Recoil Reduction System for STEYR M-A1 same as Glock Gen 4 carries now. I have Glock and Steyr, both great fellas, but Steyr is like Glock 19 in size and really sits great in hand

i have one

I have the m40 a-1 and absolutely love it, to me it is a current age glock on steroids, it points and shoots better than any of my 7 or 8 glocks that i have owned and its slightly smaller and shorter than a glock 22 or 19. These guns are over built and of exceptional quality, i have two or three buddies getting them as we speak, and they arent a grand like the compact glock 19/22's are. The only thing i did with mine is change the crappy trapazoidal sights to a set of three dot night sites, i also bought two extra mags, a holster and a steel full length guide rod, you can also get a shoulder stock and / or a grip plug for them as well.there are a lot of glock fans out there, i was one i know, take a m9 or m40 apart, look at each component beside each other, there is no comparison in quality, fit and finish, plus the grip is awesome!!!

Better get one before someone figures this out and they double in price

BTW there was a u tube video of a guy running it over witgh his half tom, picking it up and firing it.......totally cool

I have one, Love it!! I had issues when i first got it and figure that's why the guy sold it. New extractor and not a hitch since. I actually bought 2 of them and just sold one to a buddy. I use it for IDPA and love the trap sights. Sold my gen4 Glock 17 in favour of the grip on this thing. Hardest part was finding a holster and mags for it. I just scored 5 mags for 100 bucks. Check out steyrclub.com

Had one, don't miss it. It's also way bulkier than G19, or even the G17 just a little shorter.

How many mags does it come with? I heard mags for it are kind of hard to find...

Just bought my first pistol, M9A1. Wanstalls in Maple Ridge has it for $649. They carry extra mags in stock too. It comes with 2 mags, and a case.

I really like it. Had a few FTEs but it's just breaking in I figure. I dont care for the trap sights, but they are cool nonetheless.

im seriously considering buying this over a glock or M&P. What you guys think?

While I love Steyr, I recommend not purchasing an M-series pistol as your bread-and-butter, one-and-only.

I've mentioned some of these same comments in about three other threads on this gun, but here goes anyway:

(1) Sights - the trapazoid sights are completely wack. It is a failed idea. While you may be able to convice yourself that they are good idea when you are checking out the gun, or reading on the internet, your experience putting rounds down range will convice you otherwise... fairly rapidly. If you have to buy a pistol with trapazoid sights in order to learn that they don't work well, then that is the way it will have to be. Don't say I didn't warn you. North Sylva seems to have put some three-dot night sights on some of the new-old-stock MA1 pistols, but it increases the price by about $100. If you have to get this as your first gun, please, at least get some three dots. Learning to shoot while using trazoid sights.... will not work ...and it will be a frustrating experience for you in coming to that conclusion.

(2) Trigger - the M series have a "mushball" of a trigger, at least the 2008 and earlier ones (which is all there is in Canada). It is a little bit like a GLOCK trigger, but with a longer, mushier take up, a less defined break-point... and less defined reset. It is hard to explain in words, but I was looking at some of the "new" Steyr M9A1 pistols my local shop (Reliable) got in recently. I mainly wanted to know if they were the actual "new" (2010-onward) Steyr pistols, with the redesigned trigger and extractor, but they were not. The date codes on the two I was looking at (one with trap sights, one with three dot night sights) were "BOT" (April, 2008 - just before Steyr left the North American pistol market for a hiatus to redesign some aspects of the gun). Neither of those pistols had the loaded chamber indicator (which was a bad design that I believe interfered with reliable extraction). The M9A1 I had (which was a 2006) had the loaded chamber indicator. I am not a fan. I personally would wait at least until the redesigned Steyr M pistols [which will have a date code like "GWO" (July 2010) or something like that, the middle letter must be a "W" (1, as in 2010, 2011,etc.) for it to be a redesigned gun] come to Canada before taking the plunge on a Steyr pistol.

Anyway, when checking out those "BOT" date coded guns... I was struck by two things... (1) the distributor is STILL clearing out new-old-stock! and (2) the trigger is really, really poor or these guns. I know there is a whole bunch DIY and parts swap approaches from SteyrClub.com and others in the U.S. for improving the trigger, but... when you have to buy custom made parts just to get up to par with your mass produced competitors...

I know not everyone is sold on the GLOCK trigger, but after trying damn near everything available on the Canadian market over the past 6-7 years, I have come to have a real appreciation for the GLOCK and the GLOCK trigger. The combination of weight, "crispness", distance of travel, and distance of reset is really still the industry leader in my view. The "crispness" of the reset is probably the best feature of the GLOCK design. I really love the GLOCK 19. I have two of them (and two 23's, which are the same thing in .40cal) and I believe they are the best all-around pistol you can get. Get a GLOCK 19 with a 106mm IGB Austria barrel and a set of Trijicon night sights and don't look back. That set up will put you back like $1,100, but it will be cheaper in the long run than buy a selling a lof of different guns until you find the right now.

Now... keep in mind... everyone is a bit different. My girlfriend loves the Beretta 90-two, and she has tried everything I have ever owned and most of what I have borrowed from friends. The search doesn't lead everyone to the same place, but I am a big believer that you can't really go wrong with a stock GLOCK 19 (as long as you get proper three dots sights, the stock plastic GLOCK "U" sights also really suck).

If the GLOCK 19 is not in your price range, go for a GLOCK 17, but make sure you get rid of the stock sights and get some Trijicons before you start trying to learn and get frustrated.

If you are really a Vancouvergunnut, I would be willing to meet up with you at PCDHFC to let you try out the GLOCK 19 vs. some other guns. I believe in it that much! (I am also a big fan of, and shot a lot of, HK P7M8, P7M13, SIG 229 and 228, and others. It's not like I'm one of these guys that is completely sold on just the one gun... that I happen to own, but I would recommend the GLOCK!) (Also, having said all this, if you want a pistol that is really easy to shoot, has a very light trigger and very short reset, and has some weight to it, get a 1911. If you want a 9mm, get an STI Ranger II. But if you want a GLOCK, M&P, Steyr, duty pistol type gun... I definitely throw my vote behind GLOCK!)

If the redesigned Steyr M pistols come to Canada and the trigger is as improved as much they say it is, and they have three dot sights, I will be buying one again. Until that time, don't torture yourself trying to learn to shoot with a mushball of a trigger and wack trapazoid sights!

You really have to ask your self what is the purpose of buying a hand gun. If you just want something affordable and unique to shoot on the odd weekend, then go for it. I am really starting to enjoy my Steyr M9 - I will admit that need to upgrade a few things, such as the sights. Unique and cool design but not practical for target shooting. Trigger feel, needs improvement and is in the works.

Since Canadians are not allowed to carry or use for self defense, hand guns are just toys. If it was a duty pistol you needed to carry, I would say go for the Glock - hands down the standard of reliability.

M&P - I haven't had the pleasure, but I know the Range Kit in 9mm or .40SW is best bang for the loonie and from what I hear, it's a good pistol.

I bought the Steyr because I didn't want to bring to the range what my friends had, but above all, I think it's a ###y beast.

Have you been to DVC in PoCo? They don't have any Steyrs, but they have a decent selection of other 9mm you can shoot. If you are a budget, Ruger SR9 is another great option.

Hmm interesting ghostie. Thanks for the detailed post.

I didn't know that the ones they sell here in canada were from 2008. The whole reason i liked the sound of this gun is because people were saying how nice the trigger is, and what i have found is a nice trigger is the most important thing on a pistol for me.

kind of disappointed because i really like the look of this gun

Thanks for the post. Yeah i've been to DVC, im actually a member there. Im currently waiting for my RPAL in the mail so i can go out and buy myself a handgun.

I've tried glocks berettas, USPs, sigs etc.

I'd have to say my favorite by far is the sig 226. Excellent trigger on these, however they are unfortunately out of my price range.

You can draw your own conclusions on this, and the new/old stock thiing doesnt matter in my opinion, mine according to the date chart is 2005?? Anyway it holds points and shoots hands down better than any............any.........of my glocks and its 100% reliable.......i did change out the sites, couldnt shoot those trapaziolal things.I challenge anyone to look at a glock 22 with the slide off against a steyr with it off, the steyr has a steel carrier inside it unlike the glocks little stainless tabs holding slides on and such, u will see how much stronger and better a firearm it is very quickly, the plastic is more robust as well......shoot them both, you will buy the steyr over the glock 19/22 any time

^ thanks. I REALLY like the look of the steyr, and i've heard on the internet that they actually have great triggers, but im wondering if ghostie is right about the pre 2008 models not having the updated features.

Once i get my RPAL in the mail im going to go to a shop and hold it and see how i like it. It just bugs me that glocks are ~100-200 dollars more than most polymer pistols on the market. I mean sure they have a great reputation, but are glocks really built that much better?

Well if Steyr brought this pistol out in 1970 it would be fantasic "but its 2012"

Steyr lacks the following

-Ambi mag release
-ajustable back straps
-A good textured grip
-a good trigger

As for glock costing more then some polymers, well look what a HK will cost you ;) the XD is cheaper but made in Croatia so the labour is less then a well paid austrian lol

honestly not having ambi mag release and adjustable back straps doesn't really matter to me.

im not sure if this guy has one of the "new" ones but he seems to be pretty stoked on his.
