True... but 4 years ago, in 2008 record numbers were reported...we had snow on the ground for opening day and ice rain in the morning.... average temperature for season was frigid...

Merickville area also has a severe yote problem.... That being said, I pass the Merickville 401 exit every day for work and in the soy field invista owns it is not uncommon to see 20 deer grazing at the right time of day.....

Crowds showing up in full camo with guns can only lead to no good.... just go about your normal business (don't give the time of day) and if some onlookers cross the line, call the cops or MNR and have them deal with it in a legal/professional manner. Guns and crowds sure won't play well in the media....

Agreed.

It sounds great in theory but you're just fueling them as well by doing that. Don't give them attention, just if they step beyond their bounds and just take legal action.
 
I'm surprised anyone would be willing to walk such a fine line and post it publicly. That fence is a pretty high one to fall off if a CO happens to find that anyone in that group is interfering with the hunt and chooses to press charges. Sounds pretty cut and dry if the protesters selectively choose to 'hike' in the area people plan to hunt and post about it like that. Good luck to all involved. I hope the CO gets the information and gets involved. I'm pretty certain that the RCMP would normally pass those issues onto a CO but can the RCMP persue charges under the Wildlife Act (Ontario's version of it)?

Law in Ontario is based on precedent (judge made decisions). Unless the Fish and Wildlife Act 1997 has historical prosecutions, I would not be inclined to take legal action.

To prosecute, it would cost 10's of $1000s. It would be the MNR enforcing the Act, so if the "observation" turns into "interference" be sure that all involved have "proof".

I don't think anyone would want to engage in an extended legal nightmare that would take years to resolve...it's just not worth it! Sounds like it could go either way on the media tightrope, in this province anyway.

Meanwhile, coyotes are attacking children in Oakville, killing pets and even people out in eastern Canada..maybe protesters should think again.

They sure can.. The RCMP are the premiere of law enforcement, they know all the laws and can charge anyone with anything, including fish and game laws.:)
 
oh god i love this. As a Niagara region resident, coyotes are an issue around here. We have an article in the paper every month or so about coyotes running around in the city and various towns, and not showing fear towards residences. People have lost pets in our area to coyotes, and quite a few people have complained to the MNR who just toss their hands up in the air. And NOW, there is some hippie group trying to save them... wtf... There is nothing wrong with regulating a wild-life`s population. There are enough of them around here I can`t see there being an issue with this hunt. Unless they are actually doing something illegal or not practicing humane kills.
 
Going back to the OP, why didn't they let them observe? I can see why the hunters moved when the protesters said they were in a particular area to hike for safety. As soon as they admitted to be there to observe the hunt they should have brought them along. One per hunter, told to be silent and always behind the shooter. Any effort by them to interfere would be cause to charge them.

Sixteen Mile Road runs east /west between Richmond Street (Hwy. 4) and Wonderland Road. If travelling north on Richmond Street from London, turn west (left) just before reaching Hwy. 7 (Elginfield). If travelling south on Hwy 4 from Lucan, pass through Hwy. 7 junction and turn west (right) on the first road – Sixteen Mile Road.



Please devote at least one hour for the demo

Another Successful Coyote Demo – Photos Below



The PPC has been overwhelmed with requests from rural residents to come to their communities to peacefully protest unwelcome coyote hunts. We do not have the resources to be at all locations, so we have chosen two additional scheduled hunts for demos. Please see details below for next weekend’s coyote hunt and demo Saturday Feb. 25/12.



This past Saturday – Feb. 18/12 , we protested an organized coyote hunt on Catt Line near Springwater Conservation Area, Aylmer Ontario. Again the hunters suspended their hunt. The hunt was uneventful. We arrived to the hunt site before the hunters. The hunters saw us standing with our banner quietly down the road. They proceeded to organize their hunt, but within an hour, the hunters packed up and left.



We think hunters are beginning to understand that we have a right to peacefully communicate to them directly our objection of killing coyotes for recreation or recklessly. That coyotes are an important part of the entire ecological matrix, and systematically removing them from the landscape causes environmental harm.

I really think the hunters should just avoid these confrontations with these hippies. If they don't see much action most of them will loose interest I would think. Especially when they are driving long distances in the early morning (hippies don't like that)

But if they are seeing hounds and coyotes and hunters, they will continue to harass us with no end in sight. I can't see any good coming from this. I've learned in the past it's better to ignore these people instead of trying to reason with them or show how dumb they really are. Its like talking to a brick wall.

They are likely reporting back to other hippies that think they are saving the world, if they get more pictures, more and more of them will be out every weekend.


If this got to the media, I would bet it would make us look like blood thirsty rednecks while they are just trying to help the poor animals.
