I have narrowed down my search and these are the two finalist

kimber montana in 338 federal

kimber 84L in 30-06

whuch one would make a better all around rifle for all game, deer , moose, bear , elk

I have a Kimber Montana in .338 Federal. I love the rifle but unfortunatly Kimber's quality control sucks and both the original rifle, and the replacement they sent me, have rough cut chambers. The rifle itself is a great design and a pleasure to carry on all day hunts over rough terrain. The cartridge is also adequate for most game and did a great job on the elk I took with it last year.

Personally, I would choose the Montana in .338 Federal. It's lighter, has a short action, and bigger bore with comparable velocity, energy, and trajectory to the .30-06.

Same/same on game and paper. If you're going to be using factory ammo, the .30-06 wins. For a handloader, the .338 Fed is a gem...

If you've decided to get a Montana, go with the 84M. It's definitely where everything comes together for the whole concept that the Montana embodies.

I doubt very much there would be any practical difference in the field between a 30/06 and 338Federal.

I'd go 30/06. Everyone should have at least one.

I think everyone in the world besides the OP does!
Safe to say he can't go wrong either way. Running with the .338 Fed might make a guy feel he's going with a chambering that's a little unique and different...but sourcing components is a non issue between the two that's for sure.

I handled one the other day. A very nicely made rifle, definitely a cut above the common brands. Of course, you pay a premium for it. As for calibre, its really hard to beat 30-06 for practical field accuracy.

I just spoke with them and the one you speak of is an older 8400, not the 84L.

Fishing World in Hamilton. I am pretty sure it was the 84L (I could be wrong). They had is topped with a Leupold "Canada" scope, chambered in 30-06. Just a beautiful rifle. $1800 price tag.

After talking with the distributor I would assume it was an older 8400 as well not the 84L. I will call and find out for sure though... Thanks!
