ATI folder/wood SKS build

I really like the look of the VZ58, the dark metal with the wood.
It looks very aggressive, and wondered what an SKS would look like in this style.
I can't afford a VZ58 right now, so I'd figure I would waste some of my time.

I happen to have a ATI sks folder (that wiggles too much with the uncomfortable stock) and some extra wood furniture leftover from a old cooey shotgun build.

So I had an idea....remove the plastic folder buttstock and add wood!
I wanted this to be completely reversible, so I can put everything back to normal and use or sell the ATI folder.

This was all done with common hand tools, hacksaw, files, etc.

This is the first part of the build, I need to finish fitment of stock into the adapter, make the fore-stock, then sand and finish wood with tung oil.

First I cut off the handle part of the stock, filed and sanded smooth.
Cut it to a comfortable length......

I had made a shifter knob in NSCC 10 years ago in my elec/mech course out of aluminium that was the perfect candidate for the ATI to wood adapter ........

Filed flat, drilled and tapped for extension...

Test fit of adapter in ATI.......

Finished adapter, flat, drilled and tapped, ready to go....

Mounted in butt stock, I need to finish fitment and finish the wood!
Notice the flat side which mates up to the inside of the ATI stock, this does not move or wiggle at all.......

Rough test fit, right and left.

I have a powder coat kit, and will prob do all the alum bits in a flat or gloss black....I am not a fan of shiny bits..

I will update with the 2nd part when I make the fore stock, finish wood and mount everything up....hope you like it!!
I am sure this is not everyone's cup of tea, please keep this professional. I am not interested in rude comments or remarks....thanks!

Great project! I was going to do something like that to my Chinese SKS (the one in my refinishing thread) by giving it the AK-47 treatment but then decided I'll leave the major woodworking for my CZ858 when I replace the beaver barf with figured maple.

Little bit of an update.
I did try to make a front fore guard/stock by hand. It was out of spruce for an easy carving test piece.
But it had to be so thick to slip over the ATI front, that it was not comfortable to hold. Scrap that idea, on with idea #2.

So, I cut the Cooey fore stock in two and did some sanding and shaping.
I fitted the two piece like side panels, and bolted them up.
I do not want to cut or alter the ATI stock at all.
The ATI front has a checkered textured grip that I wanted to cover fully with wood. This is why the panels are long.
I am by no means a talented wood worker, I always deal in metal work. Please excuse any crappy wood work you see here.

Rough fit and drill, I did sand out all the dents and dings.

I put on 2 coats of tung oil for now on the walnut buttstock, side panels. I also stained the gas tube wood(spare chinese wood), special walnut to get a close match. I need to add a bit more. I am not completely done with the staining/tung oil treatment.

Here are a few pics mounted up with my chinese sks, like I said i need to finish the wood......It is comfortable to hold, not very heavy. I have not taken it to the range yet.....enjoy!
