I'm mounting a Zenith SB 3x12 x50 scope onto a Sako AIII in .308 caliber.
Unfortunately I'm unable to paste the diagram on this page but the eyepiece is 3.7", dia. is 30mm, and the tube is 5.6" with an outside eyepiece is 1.7". The goal is to mount it as far forward and as low as possible, taking into account the long 3.7" eyepiece.
It appears from the sako optilock site that the and go with short bases (S1700957) and ring choice would be 30 mm extra low (S21300928) but am I deciphering the info correctly?

Also, I emailed Talley and they suggest 252727 bases and medium screw 30 mm rings (300003) 30 mm low rings. There are no pictures available on the Talley site.

Have I chosen the correct Optilock rings? Would the Talley setup as suggested
be better?

Thanks.

I don't know about the extra low mounts with a 50mm objective. I'm looking at Talley mounts also in the one piece light weight design. Here's something I found.

Talley Ring Height Selection:
• Low for scopes up to 44mm objective with standard barrel contour
• Medium for scopes up to 50mm objective with standard barrel contour
• High for scopes with a 56mm objective with standard barrel contour
• Extra-High for large objective scopes with heavy contour barrels and single shot rifles

Brownells shows the 252727 base for the Sako.

I have mounted 50mm Zeiss and and Swarovski scopes on Sako's with the Xtra-low Optilok rings without a problem. You could get away with either the short or large base, the long base will give you more adjustment for mounting your scope while the short will give you greater ring spacing.

I should have mentioned that my Sako III has a heavy bull barrell; what difference does that make to the height of the mount?
Great info, jackrabbit - Thanks.

Thanks, Cinch. I'm wanting lots of eye relief with this big eyepiece so choosing the long base would make sense. It's also nice toknow the Xtra low can accommodate the 50mm scope, but does it make a difference that the Sako has a bull (target) barrel?

FWIW I have a PST 6-24X50 mounted on my Tikka Varmint (heavy barrel) using Talley LW medium 30mm rings. The OD of the objective bell is 2.25" and there's more than enough room for Butler Creek caps, but using the low Talleys would not be an option.

Running a bull barrel certainly will change the amount of clearance between the bell and the barrel. I can't say for sure if there will still be enough clearance, it will certainly be close. I briefly had a 50mm scope on a sporter weight M75 w/xtra-low rings and there was only a couple mm clearance. Personally I would try the xtra-low first, but I prefer to have my scopes as close to the barrel as possible on my hunting rifles - you may not.

Zimbu, How long is the eyepiece on your PST? mine is 3.70" and I wonder if they are comparable and if so, you were able to get the scope far enough forward with the medium Talley rings?
Thanks!
Joe

Thanks for this; I like the scope low as well, but I'm still worried that the long eyepiece might mean that I have to mount the scope too far back, if that makes any sense?

Not sure what you mean about the length of the eyepeice. Are you talking about eye relief or another dimension?

Being that my barrel has little contour, clearance is similar with the scope mounted all the way forward and all the way aft. I could post a pic if that helps.

The distance from the end of the scope eyepiece up to where the front of the eyepiece tapers down to the 30 mm tube is 3.76" on the Schmidt and Bender, so I am worried that the mount might be a little too far back to allow sufficient eye relief. Does that distance compare to your scopes you mounted withe the Talley rings?

Thanks,

Joe

OK mine is 3.5" and objective bell DIA is 2.26."

Thanks very much for posting the pictures! Our scopes are very close in size and it looks like you've got plenty of eye relief and room for flip up caps to boot.
I'd been toying with the idea of a rail system but I don't think I need it!
