Hey guys,
Was wondering what type of dies to reload an AR15 with? I have used .223Rem dies with great success but should I be switching to the AI dies for a 5.56mm chambered AR? Have heard that they are better for autoloaders but I have never tried them? Any suggestions on dies, they will be RCBS dies for loading a Sabre Defence M4.
Thanks a bunch.

Let's see if I got this straight.
You want to try Ackley Improved dies with a standard .223
or
you want to to get your AR chambered in .223 AI?

The first part is pointless. Dies are more costly and not needed with the standard case.
The second part has been done with success. I've seen it done with my own reamer.
Is getting an AR chambered in .223 AI any real benefit? Probably not.

Yah, not sure what you are talkin about either.

AI dies are for AI chambers (and why you would try and Ackley an AR is beyond me).

Now, I am going to guess that maybe you meant SB (small base) dies. Inf that is the case, yes, you may find your AR functions better when using brass resized with a small base sizing die.

Exactly.

223 AI dies are for reloading for so chambered firearms.

You need to have an AI chamber to accommodate the AI cartridge - which you get by fire-forming a regular 223 in the Ackley-ized chamber.

The AI shape does not lead itself to feeding as well in a semi....

Before you buy anything, a little more reading on the topic might be a good idea. There's lots available.

Good luck! SD

Sorry for the confusion but I think you nailed what I am looking for. I realized I didn't need the AI dies as my chamber wasn't spec'd for it, but I am looking for small base sizing dies? What are the choices, I like RCBS dies, will it say small base on the package?

Thanks for the input guys, sorry again for the confusion.

if it gives you any help i use the rcbs 223 x-sizer die because i liked there claim about not trimming brass but the die itself has been extremely difficult if it gets at all dirty or to much/to little lube it dents cases to say the least nothing but problems i would avoid them. they also have ar specific dies now that i have not tried but would assume thats what your looking for. hope that helps
