What uh... What are we hunting 
Rabbits, mice, T-Rex's, elephants, sea turtles, deer, moose, eagles, snakes... What your shooting will have a lot to do with the recomendation.
Your going to get a lot of flack, cause people ask these rediculous open ended questions all the time
For example. When you say hunt, do you mean eat afterwards... Or, jst to hunt and kill something? Now someone will chime in and say thats illegal. Well the question to be begin with is illegal, so..
Give more details and someone will give a technical answer

A 147 gr truncated cone ball would probably give the best all round performance, providing reliable cycling in an auto pistol and acceptable terminal performance where small game is not torn up, but provides reasonable penetration and wound volume on larger stuff. I would prefer a .357 for .36 caliber handgun hunting.

9mm glock to hunt....
Gotta disagree with you man. You could get rabbits, pheasant, grouse if you wanted, even turkeys. Really any small game like that could be taken with a 9mm, and even will an ethical clean kill. A 124gr +P hollowpoint for turkey but anything smaller could be taken with FMJ if a through shot could be safe in the circumstance and of course if FMJ hunting was legal. I know if it was legal I would be up for it. Would add something to the challenge and sport of it to get within 30 or 40 feet, much harder than taking them at 50 yards with a scoped 22 or something.
Just my 2 bits, its a moot point anyway, as it ain't gonna be legal any time soon.

I meant things like like deer and... I did mean to eat afterwords. In fact that's why I asked. I'm thinking that if one killed a deer with a hollow point and it fragmented it might be a problem in terms of contanminating the meat.
Sorry man, you obviously know very little about the subject of hunting. A 9mm, anything short of point blank range, is not enough to ethically take anything as big as a deer. Small game maybe as I stated above. If you wanna go deer hunting, learn about terminal ballistics please. Buy a rifle or at least a 12ga with slugs.
To give you the benefit of the doubt, if it were legal, youcould ethically take a deer with a 460 or 500 S&W or a 454 Casull, maybe a few others. If you want to know about what to take deer with, post in the hunting section please

Keep your shots within about 25m and it will do the job if you can place your shot correctly. The only thing you would be giving up compared to .357 Magnum is effective range.

Duh! If I was going to actually go "deer hunting" I'd obviously get a rifle and educate myself. I'm not asking about conventional hunting and think I made that clear when I noted that this was not an "optimal" (nor desirable) situation. I'm asking what one would use for ammo in an unforseen emergency situation where one was forced to used a handgun to hunt. How about not assming you know a person's motivation or thinking behind a simple question.
I do not think so dude.. 9mm is just as fine as any if you do your part.
After all .357 mag maximum HP has same penetration as 9mm FMJ and I have prove for that in oak. Maybe they do not carry same energy/punch but penetration is equally lethal.
