Do you think the Leupold VX 111 - 1.5X5X20 is old school now with the new optics out today? . What is on yours? Or are you using iron sights?

I've used the 1.5x5 on several rifles including a few 375s. I've never found that scope to be wanting.

Have one now on my 375 Chatfield-Taylor.

I dont have a 375 (yet) but my 458 wears a vx-III 1.5-5 with quick detach rings.
Another good choice (just my opinion) is a 1.75-6 x 32 in the vx-III series

I've got a Zeiss Diavari 3-9 on one, and a Leupold 3.5-10 with B&C on the other. Both have irons that have never been used in the field.

If you absolutely have your heart set on a low powered Leupold variable, consider the 1.75-6. Its better in low light and has a bit of power on the top-end.

I've done the low powered variable thing, and don't like them.

The 1.5x5x20 seems okay to me, but honestly, I just keep finding the classic 3-9x40 hard to beat for a general scope.

My father has one (Leupold) on his Ruger #1 in .375 H&H and he's shot everything from bears at five paces to moose at over 500 yards with it.

Personally, the lowest I would go is a 2-7x33 or else skip the scope all together and go with a nice aperture sight.

A nice thing about the low power scope is the generous eye relief and lighter weight.
Doesn't matter to some, but if you have to carry all day and then dont want to be hit in the face it is something to consider.

The 1.5X5X20 is a good choice, had one on my 375 H&H for many years till it sold, now sits on a 404.
I have half a dozen of the tough little scopes, even put one on my 270 when the 3X9 broke a couple days before season opened and it did the job... :)

I have irons and a M8 Leupold 4x fixed w/ QWR rings. Can't say much for the durability as I haven't shot it a lot with the scope on but it was recommended on here as a durable scope for high recoil.

From what I gathered when shopping the VXII and VX III lines were both good options and the 1.5-5x scopes seemed quite popular.

3x9 luep in tally one piece rings. could be happy with a 2x7 too. tried the lower powered but now all my rifles have a 2x7 or 3x9 mounted.

Can't imagine a better scope for mine, long eye relief and 5X is plenty of power if I need to get closer.
And besides it looks so ###y together!!!

It is not necessarily "old school," and of course it works... but to me it is an underpowered glass for that rifle... I am not knocking anyone for choosing it, everyone has their own criteria.

You can have a scope in the same weight and eye relief category with as much quality and MORE power... so why wouldn't you choose another??? The key is not compromising on the low-end of the power range but increasing the upper end and increasing the brightness (light gathering ability)... a 20mm scope is limited, no matter how you slice it.

Let me do some hunting around and I will post some links to various options on this thread. You didn't say anything about budget or power range... so I am making some assumptions, namely; that you want the best bang for your buck (budget is NOT unlimited), you want a very low power on the bottom end, since your current scope is classic... I assume that you don't want funky tacttical/target turrets or illuminate reticles etc... soooo....
