best 700 platform to transform?

The older 722 SA would make a very good choice, if not, any sps SA standard 308 w bolt face would be ideal!

The long action is easier to accessorize with detachable magazines than the short. If you know which cartridge you will build, then the choice is easier. It did take the USMC (US Army?) a couple decades to get around to converting some of their 7.62 sniper rifles to 300WM like they'd promised themselves all along.

If you're asking if you should build a 308 or a 300 Mag the 300 Mag will plain wear you down if you plan to shoot it at the bench for any length of time.

Im looking at starting a new project and wanted to get feedback on what the best rem 700 (.308 or .300 WM) would be to start with. I Would ideally be using it for a number of distances 100 yrds to 1000... I'd like to get it operational for the warm weather...thoughts?

Get yourself the 700 SPS Varmint in .308 win. Best bang for the buck (pardon the pun).

What are you willing to spend, overall for the build not just the initial 700.

There are guys on here that can give you good advice but they need some info to work with. I am not the guy to talk to but if it was my build I would go cheap SPS to start and then start spending.

I'm in the middle of exactly the type of build you're describing. My 700 SPS V is on it's way to Sean at North Shore to get trued up and a Broughton barrel spun on.

If I was going to do it over I'd probably buy a custom action right out of the gate. By the time you get all the work done to the 700 it'll cost almost as much as the custom and may not shoot as well. I only did it because I already had the rifle when I got in to F-Class.

I would get an SPS, but in stainless steel. A CM rifle will be cheaper, but SS has its advantages. I've said it before- Barrels change, but the action is forever.
