Converting a Ruger African in .375 ruger to a .416 Ruger

What's with the bold everywhere?

Bold for three reasons... first, my eyesight is getting worse all the time and it helps differentiate between what I have written and phrases within a running dialogue, second it delineates when writing within quotes or when quoting, and now I have a third... it apparently ticks you off... although after getting into the habit of this on forums about three or four years ago, this is the first time anyone has mentioned it... I was bound to run into an extreme "anal-retentive" at sometime.

It's a bit annoying to read after a while. How about investing in a bigger monitor? ;)

How about I write the way I like to... for whatever my reasons... and you choose to not read it, if it bothers you... or you can report my bold type to the mods and have them address it.

Hmmm...

Wow. Bold-ed for extra emphasis. Must be true then.

Believe it or not, sometimes I read the Internet purely for entertainment.;)

Now see? Usually I would have simply bold-ed the portion of your post I was referring to, but I can't do that, now can I? So I had to delete some of it......

I am here purely to enjoy some reading... you are bent on pursuing a scuffle, but I'm out... you have a beef with bold text, well you'll just have to learn to adjust... I only engaged because you took it upon yourself to call out "Oddione..." like you are the only one who can pull off an African hunt... sounded arrogant to me, but whatever... peace.

Reality is harsh. When I read a post from a guy who very clearly isn't in touch with what he wants to do, either financially, or skill wise (to paraphrase "I'm a .308 shooter looking for a big rifle for dangerous game in Africa, and Polar Bears, and Grizzly bears, but I don't care about the cost of ammo as I won't shoot it beyond a couple boxes, rifle has to be under $1,000.") I offer my frank advice. Frank may come off as arrogant, and if it does, I apologize however it's the truth; I've done what he wants to do.

Oddione actually asked me to meet up with him and go shooting as well, he clearly had no issue whatsoever with my advice and take on his situation and if anything, it appears he appreciated it. Only you did, I'm presuming because I remarked, to paraphrase again, not that many dangerous game hunters come from Ottawa (at least those with tight budgets), where you are apparently from. That's another simple reality, not an insult, it's surprising to hear a guy request a dangerous game, Polar Bear, and Grizzly rifle from our nation's capital in conjunction with tight budgets, and it piques one's curiosity. "peace" and all the best, please feel free to add me to your ignore list.

Sorry to the thread for the diversion, hoytcanon's remarks deserved addressing.

I am still checking with gunsmiths and sourcing parts for this build, but I have sourced a barrel, Many Thanks to Ardent. Hopefully in the next week or so I will be able to have a time line in place. Who knew that this little conversion would be such an undertaking LOL. I guess if it was just a matter of pushing the easy button everyone would do it more.

Notta problem, glad it could be of help. If you're looking for a .416 Ruger reamer and headspace gauges, Pacific Tool and Gauge is good (as long as you're not in a hurry!). Any of the major reamer makers (PTG, Clymer, Manson) will have the .416 Ruger pattern, be sure to order headspace gauges at the same time as the reamer.

Actually hoytcanon, I like your bold print as I'm getting older and find it easier to read (sarcasm) Sometimes I just read without posting but I find I must address this post, I find Ardent's questions relavent due to the OP's original posting which I too found somewhat conflicting. I have been there 6 times so obviously Ardent isn't the only one who can "pull off an African hunt".
I find it disconserting that the OP would put such a finite budget on his rifle that his life may well depend on. I find Ardent's advice sound and his questions on point, and I do speak from experience, more than most on this forum. May I suggest you not confuse arrogance with experience.

There was no confusion on my part... it is clear to me that Ardent is, well... "ardent." I have no doubt of his experience, abilities and have no issue with his advice. But we are on the "INTERNET" not in the Canadian wilderness, African plains, or Artic ice...

Many folks here are passionate about the subject, without the ability or resources to enact the dreams that they aspire to "on the internet."

Why come along and "burst their bubble?" Especially when you yourself have had the good fortune of experiencing the very "dreams" that they are expressing. It is heartless. For the record, I am quite positive that Ardents read on the situation was correct... but given that the subject was harmlessly "asking questions" and not arrogantly (and without validity) "spouting baseless information" (which then SHOULD be challenged)... my point would be, leave them their dreams. If you feel that the scenario would never come to pass and any advice on your part would be a waste of time... then just take pass on commenting on the thread... others with less discernment will surely come along and "fan the flames of desire."

It is you who has misconstrued my intention.

(All in bold) :D

Hi the OP you are refering to is from a different thread, the discussion just spilled over into mine. Hoytcanon just chose to carry on after Ardent here.

Seamac... sorry for the hijack... but I think that you got that backward... Ardent is the one who continued it here... I unfortunately responded. I will bow out now, with apologies... may your thread continue... although it sounds as though you have your conversion well underway. I did learn here that the African is not offered in .416, which was erroneously listed on a retail website. Good luck and happy shooting.

No problem but you did state in post 25 that you chose to engage because you felt he call Oddione out in another thread so it appears that you may have been looking for a fight IMO anyway it doesn't reaally matter enjoy your surfing/ reading here and all the best.

With this conversion I would put the pin in the wrist and make sure the whole action is bedded. It won't be a 1000yd sniper so reinforce it right. If it's done right then it will last forever. I was really excited about either a black Alaskan or African in 416 Ruger and those were the two they didn't make. And then Ruger teases us with the grey laminate only for lefty's. Whats up with that?

Bigger kickers have been made on that action and factory stocks with reinforcement. I would love to try a 550 Express on one but it would be expensive.

You are entirely correct and have my most humble apologies, I became confused between the 2 threads.
I too longed for the African in .416 and I have a major soft spot for .416 cals in general. I am thinking of buying one and having Ron Smith rebore it for me.
Then I would do the appropriate stock reinforcing and voila a 416 African. I just love the feel and balance of my son's, but don't need another 375.
