The 270, in it's typical loading seems to outshine the 308, at least on paper. More (or equal) energy and flatter shooting. The cheap hunting rounds seem to be same price (15$/20) as the 308, and the same is true for the premium hunting rounds (30$/20). I'm not a relaoder so ammo price is important for me.

So is there something I'm missing here? Why should'nt I buy a 270? I'm planning on buying a light 6lbs hunting rifle, will the 270 kick more then the 308?

With good bullets, I would take the 270.
Just bare in mind that with the 308 you could just buy any 180 grain bullet and go moose or elk hunting.
With the 270, a premium bullet, like a Nosler partition should be used for big game hunting. The ordinary 270 bullets just come apart too fast and don't penetrate deep enough.
But a 270 Winchester with a 150 grain premium bullet is a very deadly combination.

Personally,i find the .308 has more kick in a lighter weight rifle but everyone's different.By the way,you won't regret buying a .270.

So in 270, the common 15$/box Federal, Remington, Winchester etc. is good enough for medium game? Stick to the 30$ box for bigger critters?

By the way, would it be dumb if I put a Bushnell 3200 5x15x40 mil-dot scope on a 270win for 75% range play and 25% hunting?

I have owned both.270's, and .308's. At one time each of our six members of our hunt club only shot 270's. It is a great round and I have dropped many moose with one shot using 150 grn nosler partitions. However the partition was too much for deer. The 308 is also a great round, but the 270 is king for hunting

The 270 requires a long action rifle while a 308 can be built on a short. That can account for up to 1/2 pound of weight difference depending on the rifle brand. (BTW, If you are looking at a 30 calibre in a rifle like the T3 where all models are long actions take a hard look at the 30-06. ;) )

Performance wise the 270 may have a slight edge over the 308 when it comes to ultimate range (both are capable of longer range than the skills of most hunters) while the 308 will allow the use of heavier bullets if big critters are on the menu.

Both are great cartridges and you will be happy regardless which one you pick.

Cup n core plain jane bullets have been killing fine for years!
Don't take much to kill a deer Cmon
Save your money!

Funny how everyone has jumped on the premium ammo band wagon in recent years.I shot and killed game with imperial ammo and win super x for quite a while and never had a clue it was no good.To the o p,tinker with all the factory ammo until you find what groups best in your new rifle and go get yourself some game.130's for deer or 150's for bigger game and your good to go.I use federal premium 130 in mine because i bought into the premium ammo craze but i've made one shot kills with federal blue box as well.

There's more to shoot out west then deer, and in the early years the .270 developed a miserable reputation on larger game simply because the cup and core bullets didn't handle high velocity impacts particularly well on large animals. Even Jack O'Connor was careful about which bullet he'd use in his .270 when the game weighed over 200 pounds. The premiums have been a godsend for the high velocity small bores and have forced guys like me to give the ole .270 a bit more respect. In fact since the advent of premium bullets, the need to debate the pros and cons of various cartridges is almost pointless, now they all work.

Don't start calling other peoples opions BS!

For starters you took it out of context. I stated big game as elk and moose, and I will stick to that opinion, backed by considerable evidence.

Maybe ya should of explained yourself better!
Last time I checked deer were big game.
Sounds like your mad Cmon

You won't regret getting a 270 Winchester. I have killed a lot of big game using that cartridge: caribou, bears, sheep, moose, including the second largest moose I ever got. Did that with a plain vanilla 130 gr Silvertip at extremely long range where the velocity was probably less than 2000 fps. :)

And, I have the distinct impression that I have had more one shot kills and DRT stops with the 270 than any other cartridge I have used. That big moose was one of them. Through the lungs, and he was tipped over in seconds

Ted.

.308 is available in large quantities (like 500, 1000 rounds) And small quantities of FMJ plinker loads are available for like $12-13/20 in most gun shops.

And .308 is routinely loaded up to 180gr. I even have a few boxes of 200gr Winchester Silvertips in .308.

.308 is a short action, .270 is a long action.

...

Ya, im a biased and extremely happy .308 owner

100% about the 130gr for Deer and 150gr for Big game.

I am in the middle with my .270, I shoot 140gr Winchester Supreme, which is the Nosler Accubonds.

does the job well, Going to tote the Rem700 around for sambar from now until Winter an see if i cant knock a big stag over with it!

Why is it that some folks speak as though deer are the only species of big game? Big game to most people on these threads means all North American big game including all 3 species of bear, caribou, moose, elk, sheep, goats, antelope, wolves, and bison. Some of the Inuit guys on here would even include whales as large as bowheads and walrus. There is a big difference between an appropriate bullet that will kill deer and one that is suitable for big game larger than deer.

Ty!! :)

Ive tried all kinds of chambering and rifles..factory and wildcat...I keep going back to the .270 win. It works well for the hunting that I do. Very easy to reload and lots of factory ammo if the need arises.
