i need the long and short on the 11-87

So my wife bught me a rem11-87 (12ga) for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. I took it out for its maiden shoot at the local club for some trap... i was shooting federal bulk loads. The gun functioned fine for the first 50-60 rnds then it would fail to eject maybe 1 in 5. Is this normal for light target loads (2-3/4", 2-3/4 dra,1-1/8oz. If so should i find a different round. Or does the gun just need some breaking in? Reload ideas?

I fired 150rnds that day. Also when i gave it a cleaning after i found that the oring had some nicks it...

Thoughts?

P.s. please dont tell me to get somthing else as this was a present from my wife...
 
Even after breakin and judisicious cleaning I found I couldn't be 100% sure mine would cycle. Traded it for a Beretta Urika and haven't had a malfunction yet.

I am not goping to beat up the 1187. I had a few overe the years and could get all of the 3" ones working fine. 3 1/2" for me is a different story.
Clean it after each outing, if old seal design shoot it almost dry on the tube and if new style wet.
Try some remington sts 1 1/8 target loads in it to see how it cycles. Mine would never cycle crappy ammo. take care
 
2.75 Dram is on the light side, 1 1/8oz is good.

Try a couple different loads to see what works. Make sure the Piston, Piston Seal and Barrel Seal are installed correctly. If you have a 3.5" gun, make sure the Barrel Seal Activator is installed.
 
Its the 3" version. Its brand new. So i take it that the tube needs to be wet (oiled i presume?). I till pick up some different ammunition and give it a whirl. I will try to pot back with the results. Thanks for the info. Anything else is apreciated!

I suppose i should add that the federal shells when ejected would land about a foot from me. Some more and some less. I used one black cloud shell which was in my pocket and it flew about 6 feet. Maybe the cheap shells are just too under poweredor not built very uniformly?

When shells land that close to you, it's a good indication of under-powered ammo.

I wouldn't add a bunch of oil. Just use a heavier load, it won't need to be a magnum load, just heavier. The Black Cloud load, being heavier, functioned great.
 
When I first got my 1187 4 years ago, I tried it first with target loads. It didn't eject the odd shell. I took it out hunting and went through 3 or 4 boxes of heavy 3" loads. The gun works fine with the light loads now. Also, like you, I noticed the o ring had a nick in it when I cleaned it the first time. I changed the o ring. I picked up some viton orings for about 60 cents each. I changed it again this past fall , not because it needed it, I just did it. If you get o rings from Remington I think they are about $5.00!
 
Don't put oil on the magazine tube, the high temp gas will cook it into carbonite. Use a synthetic like BreakFree CLP. Spray it on the piston, rings, and mag tube and then shoot it. It'll clean off the old residue while you shoot.

Change the O-ring if you think it needs to be changed, but just clean it and shoot it lots with proper target loads, not WallyWorld cheapos.

Mine did the same thing with that ammo at first. Some 10 years later it shoots it fine.

I use an O ring from GBS I got 10 for $10 instead of 1 for $20. Not sure if the O ring makes a difference it shouldn't. Think it just needed to be broken in?

Of my shotguns I shoot the best with my 11-87
 
i have an 11/87 trap and shoot 1oz loads with no problems. i also have an 11/87 sps and shoot 1 1/16 duck loads.seems to function fine even in sub zero weather.
