Hello fellow Gunnutters,
I recently came into a older (1970's I would guess) Remington 1100 in 16 gauge. It is in very nice shape, and I would like to use it, but, my concern is that if I put steel shot through it I will wreck the barrell... What do you guys think?
I would also like to know if it is possible to buy a replacement barrel as it would be nice to get a barrell with changeable choke tubes... If this is possible perhaps someone out there could point in the direction of a place to purchase such a thing?
Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have done both. First I sent my 60's 1100 barrel to Briley in the US through their canadian associate and had choke tubes fitted in my original barrel. It took about 6 weeks and came back just under 300.00 with three tubes. Then when remington reintroduced the 16ga 1100 around 2003 I bought a complete replacement barrel from the remington warranty dept could not get it any other way. That I would not do again since the barrel weighs a ton compared to an old style one, looks like a 12ga with a 16ga hole in it. It was like 430 plus taxes and shipping and came with one mod tube. I think epps ordered that barrel for me ?? That barrel I have fired a box maybe of steel shot but would in either now but not with the full choke tube. You will not find this 16ga stuff in canada unless super super lucky nor could I find anyone that had the gear to open a full choke on a 16ga or thread for tubes.
Briley does such a good job it is not worth looking.

I have shot hundreds of Federal 16 ga steel loads through my modified choked 1100. It is an early '70's gun. No issues whatso ever. I also shoot steel handloads at 1550 fps through it also with no issues. Barrel walls are thick and the MOD choke is open. The largest shot I shoot is #2. Go at it you won't hurt any thing. A new Remington 16 ga barrel would likely require the modification of your forearm to fit properly.

regards, Darryl

Whats to say that somebody hasn't already fired steel shot thru the barrel.

In a 16ga slim at least here. Have to really look for steel shot in 16ga and when you do it will be 4, 6 or 7 1/2 which will do no damage but have a terrible pattern with a fixed lead full choke.Rem and fed also made some no.2 but they are like hens teeth
If they did fire steel and it was large diameter you will pick it up with the slight bell at the end and a straight edge. Yes sir the large shot will bell the old rem fixed full ckoked barrels

Thanks for all the help! Perhaps, I will just look into getting it opened up to modified. But, this is the only shotgun I own and wanted to go for turkeys in the spring... I believe lead is legal for turkeys in MB. But, I will have to check the regs... Looks like I might just have a good excuse to buy a new 12guage toy... LOL... at least now I can tell the wife I tried... ha... thanks for all the help.
