Gas piston & M14 shorty

maybe a stupid question - how do you guys take out the gas piston with the bayonet lug so close?

I thought of this but it seemed like quite a chore to just clean the gas cyl

Back off the gas lock and slide it away towards flash hider. There should now be enough clearance.
If not slide the gas cylinder free of it's splineways and rotate it till piston is removeable.
Or take off the flash hider
