Hi There

I have a Marlin Guide Gun, I have a Skinner Peep Site on it now. (Works good) Thinking of adding a xs lever scout mount, and a low power 1.5-4 scope with good light finding qualities. Can any one out there give me some feed back on this type of setup? Can you look through the peep site and then through the scope to get the magnification? I am not sure I understand how this works (Sorry) Teach me please.....

Thanks For the help......

You cannot use both, at least in my experience. If you want to put on a scope, then you would be using the scope and your peep sights would not be visible (the centre of the scope is not on the same line as the centre of your peep sights, nor should it be). It is possible that the scope could be removed and you could see the peep sights.
It is up to you, but trying to swap between different sighting systems is not a good idea, again in my experience. You will also find that the scope will change the balance and carrying comfort of the rifle. Depends on your style of hunting.

Hi, Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking, most of the time I use this gun as my bush Gun (For Moose) , but if I wanted to use it for Deer or Bear , I could strap on the scope and set it up quickly. I am not sure why they sell this product then. If they can not be used together than, changing the peep site out with a basic base and mount the scope should be the same thing.....Well something to think about....

Thanks

I've got scout scopes on three rifles and they work well. While I definitely like quality aperture sights, scout scopes give you better low light performance, and let you reach out and touch targets much farther out than apertures.

Don't pay too much attention to someone telling you how your rifle "should" be set up. It's your rifle, period.

Hi Northman999

Any recommendations on a scope, brand, power etc....I mostly Hunt Up north in Ontario at Algonquin Park Area, lots of Moose and Bear...Normal shot 50 to 75 Yards (With my peep sites, but would like to go about 150 to 200 yards with a scope if needed. I am shooting a Marlin 1895 Stainless Guide Gun in 45/50 "Davision Edition".

Thanks for the help.....

There is only one: The Leupold FX-II 2.5x28 IER scope.

Leupold is making a VX-II 1.5-4X28MM SCOUT SCOPE in their custom shop but I think if you want more power a regular scope mount position is better.

In my experience, playing with an XS setup, you can't marry a conventional scope and the rear peep without compromising cheekweld. The peep sits up enough that trying to get a conventional scope eyepiece to clear it puts the scope way too high. Scout scope in QD rings works well. I have this setup on my M14 shorty using an Ultimak rail and a Burris 2-7 scope. Tried something similar on my 1894 Marlin but found it just unbalanced the rifle. Ended up using an Aimpoint Micro instead. Doesn't gather light like a scope, but gives a great aiming point on dark backgrounds.

Not to be an ass, but Algonquin Park is not "north" - the only thing it's north of is the GTA and the 401 corridor. Some start it at the French River, I'd argue that north starts at the Sault Ste. Marie-Sudbury-North Bay line.
I've been using the Guide Gun since they first came out and the one I have is one of the first dozen brought into the country. I've had pretty much everything on it and have settled on the XS extended rail with XS white line front sight and a scout scope in QD rings.

The two sight systems do not co-witness, however that should never be an issue. It's either one or the other - optic or, pop the QD rings and use the irons...
