buying an AR, what's important?

I'm a little surprised that the trigger broke doing a drop test on concrete. Maybe a bad trigger. It's not exactly a fragile part. Frankly, the differences between the M16 and AK47 triggers and hammers aren't exactly huge.

For some reason it works again after a buddy played a bit with the trigger and a screw driver.

I can't really explain this myself, we didn't take it apart or something.

You might have received a French contract model. They aren't supposed to work after the drop test. It's a safety feature and part of French military specifications.

They also don't come with a cleaning kit; just a corkscrew and cheese knife wrapped in a white flag. :dancingbanana:

There are a few very nice AR being made in Eroupe, HK, Astra in Switzerland, Proarms Armory in Czech and of course Sabre Defense in UK. nearly all of them have been producing firearms for ever, so the quality will be way better any "Mil Spec" that is so commonly mistakenly taken as a sign of quality.

Lolz...

I have the Magpul MOE on mine and the MIAD on the AR10 rifles. They are decent. LMT comes with Ergo which I actually like as well, although some don't.

Try the drop test with a Pmag rather than the metal one. That would be more consistent with the Sig as well ;)

In North America we are taught not to drop our rifles!! :p I didn't think French military doctrine extended to the Swiss!!! :p

lol, I see what you did there. "For sale, french post WW1 rifle, never fired in anger, small ding from being dropped, wine stains on the sling. Local sale best, p-up in a field outside of Paris."

Honestly though, too much French blood was spilled in WW1 for the joke to be accurate.

Vichy France more than nulled any contribution the French made during WWI. Christ over 2000 allies were killed by the ####### Frenchies during the liberation of North Africa; look up Operation Torch. The French must never be allowed to live it down.

I highly recommend reading Rick Atkinson's Liberation Trilogy. Only the First two books are out, third is being written.

I'm aware. But the past is the past. Each generation gets a clean slate.

I'm going home to drop all of my rifles, one at a time! Should I drop my pistols? What about fire tests, and acid? Oooh, I know! Bayonet mounted spear throwing test!

I'm just glad to see I'm not the only one that climbs up to the roof of my house and pitch my new firearms onto my driveway.:)

LOL I fail to see the point too.

Actually I think the Swiss were far worse than the French during WWII. :D So if it were a Swiss Rifle it probably never leaves the safe and the safe is half full of stolen gold. :dancingbanana:

Personally I think the AR is the finest fighting weapon ever made!!!

Ok, just to give you guys some feedback: I threw my glock at the wall, and the slide popped off, and I smashed my leupold scope with a mallet, and it broke too. This stuff is all $h!t. On the upside, I tossed my cooey out the second storie window, and it straightened out the front sight! Yay Canada!:dancingbanana:

Update: Have since taken the AR to the 25m, 100m and 300m range and it turned out to be really accurate. Had the trigger worked on (did have some problems earlier). So far it proved to be reliable enough to be used on a one day "offensiv-defensiv-course"

Last friday I got the chance to visit such a course.

We did cover basics of rifle-shooting in the morning, went over to fire&manouver-drills after that and low light-shooting in the evening.

The only thing that I changed was the grip (MOE rubber-grip).

Put about 500 rds through it and after getting used to the diffent handling (like the magazine or the charging handle) it performed real great.
I'm still used to the SAN 551, which I was using early in the morning because I was acting as an instructor for the basic-stuff.

Also liked the light weight and how easy it is to clean, quite a bit faster then the guys using Swissarms (which most used).

What I didn't like was that the castle nut (?) got loose, have to loctite it in place.

Now I have to get a night sight, because I couldn't hit any target once it got dark without using a flashlight.

Any recommendations for that?
