Stuck shell in 870 MM

This is a common issue with Remington 870's. I have a Wingmaster that does the same thing with cheap Walmart Winchester Universal loads. Some people say it is caused by low brass on these shells that swells up in the chamber. The issue will go away if you use better quality ammunition (Winchester AA target loads run great). I've shot about 100 rounds of Federal premium and Remington Slugger through my WM since getting it with zero issues.

My 870 eats anything but Winchester target loads. I use Remington gun club target loads with zero issues for clays and after close to two thousand rounds through my 870 the only ftf or fte are with those Winchester target loads.
If anyone is interested in some Winchester target ammo let me know , I will let it go for cheap , got lots.

after clearing the jam, polish the chamber, did it to mine and it hasn't jamed up on the cheep stuff since.

This.

Its a known issue with 870's of recent vintage. Heard about this more than a few times here on CGN. Polishing the chamber seems to help. If your not confident doing it yourself, its a easy job for any competent smith.

Very helpful post!:dancingbanana:

I've had my 870 for 2 years now and I couldnt figure out why it would jam after a couple dozen rounds. Good thing they're made well, cause I've had to slam it to get the stuck shells out.

Toss the 870 and get yourself a Maverick 88 ... they'll eat ANY ammo you throw into them without a hiccup

on a more serious note though ... my buddies 870 is the same, and it's older ... not too bad, but it doesn't like some of the cheap low brass stuff. As long as he stays with high brass shells, it cycles fine.

Any info on how to properly polish the chamber? do any other parts need work or should be done anyway?

My 870 had teh same issue. 5 minutes with a brake hone a drill and some oil to keep it from getting too hot and it helped alot. I've ran thousands of cheap federal target loads through mine no issues. I bought 1 case of winchester on sale and it gave me the issue 2 out of 3 shells. After I took the hone to it it was 1 in 10. went back to the federal... no issues.

so polishing will help... or stay away from the winchester... That's my solution.

Wrap a decent amount of steel wool around a bore brush and mount it in an electric drill. use some oil and moderate speed. Just google "polish shotgun chamber". Tons of posts.

Same for me. The 870 supermag will take anything but the winchester target. The difference in price for remington target and winchester is about 5 bucks on a case of 250

I had the issue with my factory barrel 870 with cheapies as well but since I've purchased a few aftermarket 12.5" and 14" barrels for my 870 it hasn't choked once on the cheapies in the shorter barrels. Maybe an issue of tighter tolerances from factory barrels? Don't know.

The problem is the ammo and not the gun. Quality control on this ammo is very poor at best. I've seen that Winchester crap get stuck in every kind of shotgun from $100 single shots to +$20 000 trap guns.
