finally a couple questions i dont see in my hornady book. first off, using a lee breach lock challenger kit. i noticed when i de prime the primers go flying out the right hand side of the press. the piston as ill call it is open on one side but looks like there should be a plate. from the reading i did through my manual it shows that its open like that for the attachment for the re primer to go in to. for now ive put just the attachment in there and it seems to be directing the primers to the left. anyone have a better way of doing this?

second, neck crimping. im using rcbs dies for my 30.06. how far down should i crimp the neck? as far as itll go? half way? just enough to hold the bullet snug? does it matter how far down its crimped? and im also finding that the brass is getting jammed up a little on the way down, is that normal? its lubed up already, i tried using a bit more lube and no change. also the hornady book says to trim the neck and de bur and chamfer before de priming, the lee case length guage and trimmer combo needs the primer out first so im doing those two backwards.
 
Hi Uchi;

The primer arm is intended to be there to deflect the spent primers into the bin and down the tube. This is by design. I'm not sure but mayb Lee was thinking we could deprime / size and prime in one stroke. I don't do that though sine I prefer to deprime / size then clean the primer pockets, trim, deburr, brush, steel wool (clean), then wipe down my brass. All of this (except the cleaning of the pockets) is done on the Zip Trim.

I'm not familiar with the RCBS crimp die. I use the Lee FC die and try to put the crimp over the cannelure but this doesn't always work. Mostly I just crimp near the edge of the case - say 1/32" from the edge.

ok good to know thanks tom, i set up the die the same way the rcbs instructions said to set it up i just wanted to make sure i was going far enough.
 
I usualy put .004 of crimp pressure on bullets going into a semi and .002 for the ones feeding on a bolt or single. Use your caliper to mesure case diameter and the edge of the case after crimping should be .002 to .004 smaller than the case diameter
 
The crimp should be at the cannalure on the bullet (little grove).
If there is no cannalure, ease up on the die a bit.
If it's too tight, the die will push the case neck into the bullet and then
the neck will get shoved into the case body creating a bulge right at the
shoulder.
This will not feed into your chamber.
The die needs to be backed off slightly when going from cannalure bullets
to straight sided or smooth bullets.

I don't crimp on bolt actions.
 
FWIW - Crimping is over-rated, I havent done it for years - just another thing I can screw up. Heres a tip - after sizing the brass, then trimming and chamfering - try the empty case in your rifle to see if it fits....
 
I don`t crimp any rifle loads. If your cases aren`t uniform in length it will cause trouble, and yes you have to adjust seating depth for the cannelure on the bullet which will determine your amount of bullet jump to engage the lands.
 
thanks guys, although i dont think i was clear in the original question and thats my fault. my rcbs die de primes and puts a crimp on the neck of the bullet all in one step. if i give it a little shove it just puts a small crimp on the edge of the neck, if i push the case a little further into the press itll visually crimp the neck halfway down to the shoulder of the bullet. the die is set up the way the instructions told me to do it. my issue was with how far down the neck to the shoulder should i be crimping the neck. it doesnt appear to crimp it any tighter if i push it down further, ill check with my vernier just to be sure, but it makes the crimp go further down towards the shoulder if i press it in further.

instructions said to adjust it so that at the fully raised position the die was touching the thing that holds the bullet, the correct name for it isnt with me right now, and then add 1/4-1/2 turn, i added 3/8 turn just to be in the middle.

When you say 'crimp' I think what you are actually referring to is the neck being sized back down. Crimping is what you do when (or after) you actually seat a bullet.
Put a little lube on the inside of the case mouth too, it will make it easier to pull the expander button out of the case.

added: 'shell holder' is the thing that holds the brass case into the ram.

Oh, you were talking about case sizing. Set up the case sizing die as per your instructions then measure the case when it comes out. You'll then see if you're at spec. If it's smaller than spec, back out your sizer. Is this a neck sizer or full length sizer? Just to be sure, run some resized brass through the rifle to see if it chambers alright.

excellent thanks a lot, thats what i was looking for. damn shell holder, i was reading that term in the papers today too and the book while getting things organized, lol.

so ive been doing it right, i just close it till it doesnt go any further.

and yes thats what i meant, neck being sized back down, my apologies i thought it was considered the same thing :)
 
I agree with Magnum_Tom. I will full lenght size a case only enough as to easily chamber, i will chamber a few cases without any bullet to see how easily the bolt closes. The case may not touch the shell holder, it depends on a number of things. It will all make sense the more you do and read about reloading. Check out some of the loading videos on you tube for some good info as well.
 
My RCBS 300wm die de-prime and FL resize in one step and I'm fairly sure that this is what you are thinking is a crimp, it's not a crimp. you should set up the die as per instruction , during resizing/de-priming you use the entire stroke of the ram, IIRC 30-06 headspaces off the case shoulder like a 308 and you will need to adjust the die down until the case will chamber in your rifle, my understanding is that you will only want to bump the shoulder back this far and not further as it overworks the brass and lessens it life.

crimping happens when after seating the projectile (bullet), once seated to the right depth , either change to a crimp die and crimp the case or IIRC some seating dies can crimp by backing off the projectile seat and adjusting down the die, your instructions should have this info, if not then I’d assume that you cannot crimp with it or call RCBS and seek advice on the die.
 
i did that, tried the first one and it loaded no problem. and i measured every one i made with my vernier and they were all very close. supposed to be 3.240, biggest was 3.243 smallest 3.238 or so. thats just the way they were coming out. not sure why there was that much variation in them but thats close

If you measure your bullets before you load them you will see why there is a difference. OAL means #### all, unless you are loading for mag length. Base of the case to the ogive of the bullet is more important.

makes sense. i trimmed the neck with my case length trimmer and then just loaded them so all of the cases should be almost the same over all length within a few thou because some didnt need trimming.

Case length has nothing to do with OAL or the length from the base of the case to the ogive.
