What's the deal with Leupold?

Or should I say where's the deal with Leupold? I'm looking for some VX3 1.5-5 scopes for a slug gun and a rifle. Why are they only $399.00 in the states at every store. In Canada they start at $500.00 and go up from there. Are Canadian dealers paying some import charges? Or are they making stellar profits of Canadian consumers? I love keeping my money in Canada but I really like keeping money in my pocket. What gives?

Korth Industries is the only official importer. Leupold, the border, and US law protects their markup.

Being as the US forbids the export of scopes under ITAR,and Korth is the only authorised dealer,I'd say they have us over a barrel! Mur

I had a friend from Oklahoma ship me up some gun related stuff, and a low powered silver leupold scope for the 45-70 in stainless steel.
They taxed me over 100 bucks when the shipment crossed the border.. I think it was the Canadians protecting the retail sales tax and mark up.:yingyang:

People post this stuff and wonder why their name turns pink...

The following topics will not be tolerated. Violation will result in immediate and permanent suspension. Some quasi legal/ grey/downright illegal examples that are specifically not tolerated are:

- Shipping and driving items to Canada from the US that require US export permit.

Leopold scopes

After decades of Leopold having a "lifetime" warrantee, now, if the scope was not purchased in Canada, no warrantee.......
How the hell does a purchasor at a gun show know where the scope was originally purchased.
How do you spell Ziess?

The real criminal activity is the unadulterated GREED of KORTH and their monopoly pricing of Leupold scopes in Canada. Plain and simple.

The Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40mm matte Z-plex is $499 at Cabela's USA and is $499 at Cabela's Canada.

The Leupold VX3 3.5-10X40 duplex matte is $479 at Cabela's USA and is $679 at Cabela's Canada.

authorized importer, they have to cross the border, and smaller market.

I agree to that, but you also have to factor greed in also. Our dollar has been at par for over three years now, and not many retailers have lowered their prices even a penny, but I guarantee when I dollar goes below par all the retailers will raise their prices and sing us that song that its due to our low dollar.

Oh BTW I bought shoes today in the US for $49, here they are $100. I buy Canadian when I can, but I refuse to take it up the azz.

No one is turning pink.. or blue or red. The deal went through before 911 and the taxes and tariff's were paid into Canada's coffers.
You shouldn't be so quick to judge, without a jury.

Not judging anyone. You posted it and that's the way it reads. You didn't say it was 11 years ago...

Used to be able to do a lot of things back then that are illegal now...:p

BTW you must have bought the first SS 45-70 off the line if you had it before 9/11...;)

There's also the fact that businesses cost more to operate in Canada, so a greater margin is required to operate profitably. Remember, Korth is a business, and they're in this to make money. Nothing wrong with that.

Also think that there is an extra "level" that the scopes have to go through by Korth being the exclusive distributor. On certain products, stores like Cabelas Canada can import them directly from the U.S. without the need of going through a Canadian distributor. This helps keep costs much closer to U.S. retail prices. So it's not Korths "greed", but the distribution system chosen by Leupold, and the necessity to buy them from Korth.

Price differential is always a factor when comparing product pricing between the US and Canada. It sucks, big time. But on items like scopes, very specific permits and paper work needs to be completed properly before the US goverment will allow the exportation of these items. Now don't get me wrong, I am not defending Leupold or Korth Group, as I think the price differential on Leupold products is a bit too high. And there is also the fact that on average Canadians have a higher annual income too. I don't like it either, but that is the way our little world turns.
