Mossberg can lick my ***! slight rant

Are the 870's not a military weapon?

IMHO, the 870 platform can be taken down for a quick cleaning much easier and quicker.
Simply take off the end cap, pull the barrel off, and depress the inner tabs and the forend, the bolt all slide out.

The 500.
Take off end cap, use punch to take pin out, remove trigger assembly, remove the 2 loose "bars" on the side, remove the slide, remove the lifter (as you can tell I am tired and not using proper names), remove mag tube, remove forend, remove bolt... Seems like a lot more complex to me. Its easy, now that I have done it, just complex.

This sounds like a typical Mossberg bashing biased opinion. So after your two steps listed for the 870 you have all parts out of the gun? What about your shell stop and interrupter, how easy are they to come out? What about your trigger assembly? Your lifter? Why take out the lifter anyhow? If you are going to claim something is crap, it should be a valid and fair comparison.

The 500 is a super simple gun to work on, my tools consist of a pen, stick or key to punch out the pin and a 341mL brown bottle, bottle is optional. I am not familiar with this extra step of removing the mag tube, I own 2 500s, one being a Lakefield/Mossberg as well and neither have ever had the mag tube off. I find them simple to work on, perhaps you are missing something?? Maybe ask someone at your range/club how to disassemble it.

One other thing, it is a Mossberg, you don't have to clean it ;)

I have to agree with what so many others have said.

Mossbergs are a bit harder to take apart than 870's, but they're still not bad, and they can function when so crapped up it's rediculous, so you can chose to strip and clean when it suits you instead of when you have to (because you won't HAVE TO in order for it to function).

Bashing no, they fire great, this one is very accurate we found, just not something I would enjoy taking apart regularly (which I do, almost every time I go trap/skeet shooting). No need to go to a local club and ask them how to do something I know how to do, now. Was just frustrated was all. I never claimed it was crap, though I did tell mossberg to lick my ***, but that was out of frustration with that stupid mag tube spring system that not many people seems to have seen. To do a basic cleaning (the barrel, receiver, bolt, bolt carrier) I prefer the 870 over the 500. But this isn't my gun, so all is good now! :D

I love my 500. I have bought and sold a pile of guns over the last 25 or so years. But one of the first ones I ever bought was the 500 and it's the ONLY one I have never considered selling (that is until I bought an S&W 686 last week, now I have two guns I will never sell). Although one of the guns that I did sell and I should not have was an 870 Wingmaster "light contour".

If it says Mossberg on the gun, stay clear. Theres a reason you can get a 535 3 barrel combo for under 500 bux, everyone I've seen with them has had issues (jamming, not ejecting shells from the semis, etc) You made the right decision going to the 870. That gun will last longer than you.

jet hunter you are so right. Strange to me why someone would rant about the lack of knowledge on gun repair. I wouldn,t tell anyone. Dah!

Funny, I didn't say I was retarded or anything, and I did go and inform myself on the 500 dis-assembly and was greeted with something new. Not a lack of knowledge on gun repair, A. cause this was a cleaning, not a repair. B. I had the knowledge for a 500, this is something different that didn't pop up in any searches online, and it seems like most people here haven't even seen it.

Also, if you never told anyone, how would I get helpful comments and hints back? I was frustrated with a new (to see close up, and touch for the first time) gun that didn't match up to the instructions FROM Mossberg. I expressed that the gun works very well, cycles nicely and feels great, however, I am not a fan of the complexity of the take apart. Its not difficult, its complex. Meaning it has several more steps that what I prefer for a quick tear-down.

Mostly, I started the thread to see if anyone else felt similar to my opinion, and if anyone had seen that particular mag-tube spring deal.

So go ahead, mock a guy who was venting on something that was frustrating and wanted to ask a valid question on a particular peculiarity discovered. You have been a member here MUCH longer then I so you must be perfect too.

Oh by the way, You screwed up your "Please Delete" edit on your sale thread, you may want to go back and fix that so it will actually get deleted...

I've taken apart both my 500 and a friends Lakefield 400. With the exception of the mag tube having to come off on the 400, both guns were virtually identical and easy to strip down after reading the manual once. Only tool required was a punch to remove the trigger assembly group, and for that I used a small screwdriver.

Tools? REALLY??

My 500 comes apart with my fingers (push the pin from one side, then pinch and pull it from the other). Maybe use a pen or pocketknife or something if it's feeling stubborn.
