It's ok as long as you stick to that barrel length or longer, and it looks like that barrel will not be compatable with any other 870 because it looks like they have moved the barrel ring forward quite a bit

This is long overdue. I hate messing around with the mag extension and barrel clamp when performing cleaning/ maintenance.

I am a real KISS guy when it comes to shotgun disassembly/ reassembly.

Bingo. Probably a better setup for someone who's life relies on the gun daily, but IMHO it takes the versatility away for a sport/fun shooter. That versatility is one of the reasons I like the 870 platform.

They don't even address the issue on the website. Are the hoping no one notices?

I think two things:

- Looks AWFUL
- Limits barrel length for obvious reasons. Is it me, or does it look like the longest barrel possible is like 16.5"? Which would be (i think) about 0.5" longer than the 16" limit for the US.

More than anything I would think this is simply a cost cutting measure.

Sure, you can argue that one solid long tube would be advantageous, both from a KISS standpoint and strength standpoint. However, there is something to be said for modularity, adaptability, and backwards compatibility.

I would say, regardless of the advantages and disadvantages, it is simply far cheaper to make a longer mag tube and adjust the welding spot for the barrel ring. I think money wins this one.

Too funny. One of the reasons I like the other makes is because of the one piece full length tube. Unless your switching from hunting to tactical with a setup. The mag extension is a pain because sometimes the follower can get jammed. I like it. Took Remington long enough.

yer i think as a one bbl lenght only dependable gun its a great idea, but with 11 million 870,s made it would be a bad idea for it to be a permant change.

Good idea, bad execution. Why does the mag tube not end flush with the end of the barrel? While I like the idea I won't be buying one because the mag tube isn't long enough to be aesthetically pleasing to my eyes, and what's the capacity? Looks like they're shortchanging you one round, why?. If I bought it I'd probably end up putting on a one round extension, kind of defeats the point, no? Not to mention I prefer a plain stock on my shotguns.

canucklehead, I do believe the legal limit for shotgun barrels is 18" in the US, anything shorter is an SBS.

I see that Remington has finally caught up to the old Winchester Model 12 :). The magazine tube on a Model 12 holds six 2-3/4" shells, which is the same as an 870 with an extended magazine.

Just looking further since Im now looking at a new 870, its only offered on the "New" tactical model so far with the "New" Blackhwak! stock.

Bingo. as are most 'tactical' innovations such as 'self-lubricating copolymer resin' parts

i like being able to swap from a 12.5" barrel to a 28" hunting barrel. i see the traditional 2-piece mag tubes as a strength of the 870 platform, not a drawback. it promotes easy barrel interchangeability between ALL 870s regardless of year of manufacture or end-use (with the exception of the 8.5" Grizzlies).

The Mossberg barrel situation is a mess. often if you want to change barrel lengths youll also have to find a different length mag tube/mag spring.

is there anything special about the 'new' specops stock aside from it being uglier?

I'm told this spec ops stock does not collapse and hit you in the face when u use 3 inch slugs like the old ones

The Remmy Blackhawk has the wrong ergonomics for my liking.
The new mag tube sucks for barrel swaps and ya can keep the
crappy buttstock.

I'll stick with the 2 piece mag tube for my comp gun.
