Strange finish / film on my upper??

As the picture shows, I have some sort of white film / reside on my upper and only the upper on my AR. It seems to only happen when I store it in my hard case which has foam padding inside it. It comes off (or perhaps get hidden) when I rub it with a bit of Hoppes 9 oil and a clean rag.

Do you think it's a flaw in the finish, or a storage / humidity thing?

Only happens when you store it in your hard case with the foam padding leads me to beleive it is a moisture issue. But I cant see why it would only affect the upper. Possibly a bit of both? Who makes the upper? I see it is an Armalite lower.

That pic looks like it's not so much something "sticking" onto the upper, as it is the oils on it leaving and a bad finish on the components being revealed.

Maybe try storing that part elsewhere for a while and see if it does it again ...
 
The upper is made by Daniel Defense. For a while I was just storing it right on the foam, since I've noticed the discolouration I have been wrapping it in a cloth but that still doesn't help the 'white' from happening.
 
Did you honestly just ask if your guns should be wet? :rolleyes:

They should be coated with oil all over. Apply oil to the outside of the rifle every time you clean it or use it. DO NOT store guns in a case or wrapped in clothe. The foam or clothe will absorb the oil, leaving the metal unprotected.
 
tey want to be wet with oil when stored but dry from water.

if you dont want to put oil on the outside of the rifle get a remington safe dehumidifier it works great and is recargable by pluging in an outlet

i have one in my safe and my guns are dry from moister and no corrosion.
 
It wasn't a serious question with should my guns be stored wet :p
I didn't know to cover them in oil though when being stored. My other guns have been fine without so far, I guess the finish on the AR is different. I'll adjust its new home promptly, somewhere less tropical.
 
If you have one of the cheap sheet metal type cabinets, like Homak, install a small light bulb in it. 40w or even smaller heat lamp. This well keep it warm and dry in all but the worst locations.
 
I recently bought a Daniel Defence upper from Wolverine and have noticed a similar white discolouration. Mine has been stored with a light coat of oil and kept in a gun safe.

None of my other AR's or parts have shown anything like this making me think it's particular to the finish used by DD

That's where I got my upper from too. Maybe I'll email Wolverine and ask them.
 
More likely than not, it's a left over from the anodizing. Just wipe it off, oil your rifle, and stop worrying so much.

Hell, it could just be dust.
 
Get some gunzilla. That stuff keeps my gun nice and glazed. Seriously, I'll wipe it off, and next time I handle it it's got a thin film of gunzilla on it again. I love it. It seriously multiplies on it's own, getting everywhere.
