Guelph Rod and Gun Club?

The probation is actually 12 shoots AND 12 months. Basically you shoot on a range and whomever the RSO is at that time can sign your paper. Like most of us you'll be done your 12 shoots in a couple months so you'll just have to keep your sign off sheet somewhere for the rest of the year. Joining with your buddies will resolve the shooting alone thing after you are all done probation and become RSOs. Until then you'll still need to coordinate when you shoot with an RSO. Saturday morning is pretty much a guarantee that there will be an RSO there so it's a good time to get your sign offs.

'See it also depends on what type of shooting you're into...

I can see if you're primarily a rifle shooter who likes to shoot off a bench or you're a "bullseye" style pistol shooter it can be a little frustrating since range #4 and #6 are where you can do that stuff.
And yes... there has to be an RSO present so if you're a "loner" you may have difficulty using these ranges.
Especially if you'd rather shoot during the day mon-fri.

If you're an action shooter who has a friend or two GRGC is great.

Personally... I'm lucky enough to have a couple of shootin' buddies who will usually drop everything to go bust some caps.

ill have to double check.

I'm in the same boat as the OP except I won't have a shooting buddy to bring along. If I understand correctly, the RSO has to be where you are shooting? IE if you are shooting outdoors, the RSO cannot be at the indoor range and vice versa?
I want to get into handgun at some point, so that at least I'll have the option of being where the RSO is, but am limited to rifle at the moment.
Any comments appreciated.
EESA is just too far to drive, considering GRGC is 10 minutes or so from me.

Thanks,

Aaron

You are right the RSO needs to be on the same range. There's a GRGC members forum where people post when they're going to be there.

Wow, does reading this thread make me really appreciate the Nanaimo F&G Club. Buy membership, check website for which ranges are open, go to club, sign in, shoot.

Expect IPSC at GRGC to pick up in April when we will have a new IPSC co-ordinator, Me if voting at the AGM goes well.

I expect to run monthly practice sessions ( more as weather and time permits) with skills training so there will be no issue of showing up and not being able to shoot as long as you are a memeber.

Later on, if there is help I will run a couple of level I and maybe a level II.

Great news.

That's good news. It'll be nice to use the action ranges more.

Does anyone know if Galt has the no shoot alone policy? I may switch if over to that club.

@Galt
Only section which had a 2-man imposed restriction was the Outdoor Rifle section.
I believe that 2-man rule is currently imposed on certain days of the week. Unsure but I believe 2-man is on Weekends... (It was required all the time last year, but Galt's Rifle section has slowly been able to downgrade from the 2 man rule. Unexplainable CFO mandates).

I'm going to stop by Sat and see whats what. if only one RSO has to be on site than i'm sure it cant be that bad as people say. If its one RSO per person than i would be a loner SOL.

Hey,
This is Andrew again. I look after the club email and am on the Board of Directors. I look forward to seeing you Saturday, the front gate is open form 09 to 12. I'll be at the trap section all morning, just come over and ask for me, i'll give you the nickel tour.

As to shooting alone and the RSO system;
One of the trap shooters or my self would be happy to provide a tour and information about the club.
At GRGC no one can shoot alone and one person present must be a (club certified) RSO, that's a rule that the CFO has imposed upon us.

to summarize;
1. presently no one can shoot alone at GRGC
2. at least 1 person present at each range must be a club RSO when some one is shooting (the RSO can also shoot while fulfilling their RSO duties)
3. to become a club RSO you must a) be a full member b) take the RSO course
4.to be a full member, you must have been a probationary member for 12 consecutive months, AND have completed(filled out and turned in a form) 12 supervised shoots with an RSO during that time

what does this amount to?
As far as new members and silly rules go; yes the safety courses, supervised shoots, not shooing alone, and taking the RSO course all are a hassle, in my personal opinion. But thems the rules. I went through this same process. I've been at other clubs and gone through similar processes. Its the way it is, and will continue to be. Until law abiding firearms enthusiasts are not treated like (potential) criminals I don't see it changing. The best thing to do is become involved and too support groups like the CSSA and NFA.
It's only difficult for new members if they want to be loners. Shoot one of the many disciplines (trap, PPC, ODPL, IPSC, CAS) that hold regular get together at the club. Come out on a Saturday mornings when the rifle range is always busy and meet some people. Join the club forms and post a message that you looking for and RSO.

In short get involved in the club and its easy to find people to shoot with.

If you have any questions please let me know,
Andrew

anyone else here going to be at GRGC tomorrow for the orientation ?
me and a couple of my buddies will be there bright and early for the course!

What is the logic behind not shooting alone?
Hunters shoot alone more often than not.

Theoretically; Shooting alone is actually safer. It's not possible for me to sweep someone, or for someone to sweep me.

Nobody can be shot in the back while changing targets. A cease-fire is whenever I feel like it.

Long story short...
CFO believed rounds were leaving the range.
RSO program put into effect to mitigate the chances of rounds leaving the range.

It's not perfect but the alternative is to just stop shooting all together.

Just another example of a few bad apples ruing it for everyone.

On the bright side... Since other measures have been put in place for some time now I believe the club is going to be talking with the CFO to revisit this.
